MINNEAPOLIS -- Pounding out 27 hits in the two games, the Augsburg College baseball team claimed a douleheader sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Superior in nonconference action on Wednesday evening at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Augsburg (5-3 overall) scored a 9-7 victory over Wisconsin-Superior (2-4 overall) in the first game, then claimed an 8-7 win in the second game. Augsburg has won five of its last six games.
Four Auggies had four hits each in the doubleheader --
Adam Seaman (SR, Richfield, Minn.),
Brent Kolbow (JR, Forest Lake, Minn.),
Alec Johnson (SR, Marine on St. Croix, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and
Tom Petersen (SR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS).
The Auggies used a seven-run fourth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate, to overcome a 4-1 deficit in the first-game victory. Johnson drove in two runs on a triple,
Bobby Monsour (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Roseville HS) drove in a run on a single,
Lou LaChapelle (JR, Eagan, Minn.) plated two runs on a single, Seaman drove in a run on a single and
Ryan Sward (SO, Eagan, Minn.) drove in a run on a fielder's choice.
Augsburg also scored a run in the third inning, as a single by Seaman plated Kolbow; and in the sixth inning, on a sacrifice fly by Sward.
Kolbow went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Seaman and Johnson had two hits each, driving in two runs each. LaChapelle and Sward also had two RBIs each.
Starting pitcher
Eren Cur (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) scored the victory, striking out two.
Tanner Oakes (FY, Jordan, Minn.) struck out three in three innings of relief, and
Jeff Boresz (SR, Chardon, Ohio/Mentor HS) pitched an inning of relief.
In the second game, Petersen went 4-for-4 at the plate, driving in three runs while scoring two, to lead the Auggies to the victory. Seaman went 2-for-4, scoring three runs, and
Trent Anderson (SR, Eagan, Minn.), Johnson and Monsour also had two hits each.
Pitcher
Ryan Mestnik (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) threw four innings of hitless baseball to claim the win for the Auggies, striking out two while walking three.
Adam Langer (SR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS),
Dan Tombers (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) and Boresz pitched in relief, with Boresz picking up his first save of the year.
The Auggies built an 8-2 lead after six innings, and withstood a five-run seventh inning by the Yellowjackets to score the win.
A two-run double by
Adam Carl (SO, Eagan, Minn.) opened the scoring for the Auggies in the first inning, and the Auggies scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings -- on run-scoring doubles by Petersen,
Taylor McMurray (FY, Vadnais Heights, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) and Monsour. Petersen hit a two-run single in the sixth inning, with Anderson plating the last run for the Auggies on a single.
Wyatt Soderquist (SO, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) went 3-for-6 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored in the doubleheader for Wisconsin-Superior. T.J. Evanson (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), Rob Veith (JR, Brainerd, Minn.) and Jeff Miller (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) had two hits each.
Augsburg has five doubleheaders in Chandler and Mesa, Ariz., for the Greater Phoenix Invitational starting on Sunday (3/18). Augsburg faces Williams (Mass.) on Sunday at 11 a.m.
