ST. PETER, Minn. -- The Augsburg College baseball team claimed a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-6 in the first game and winning the second game 1-0.
Augsburg is now 15-5 overall, 1-1 in MIAC play, having won 13 of its last 15 games. Gustavus is now 8-7 overall, 1-1 in MIAC play.
In the second game, Auggie pitcher
Ryan Mestnik (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout, striking out three while walking one. In the process, Mestnik improved to 6-0 on the season
The Auggies allowed just six Gustavus baserunners in the second game, but all were stranded on base. The Gusties had runners reach third base in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings -- with just one out in the first and seventh. But in the final inning, Mestnik forced a groundout and a called third strike to end the game.
Lou LaChapelle (JR, Eagan, Minn.) drove in the lone run of the game for the Auggies, with a single to drive in
Brent Kolbow (JR, Forest Lake, Minn.), who had hit a leadoff double to open the fourth inning. LaChapelle went 2-for-3 for the Auggies in the second game, as did
Alec Johnson (SR, Marine on St. Croix, Minn./Forest Lake HS).
In the first game, Augsburg fell behind 6-0 after three innings, but rallied back to tie the game with two runs in the sixth inning, on RBI singles by Johnson and
Ryan Sward (SO, Eagan, Minn.), and a two-out, grand slam home run in the seventh by
Adam Carl (SO, Eagan, Minn.) -- his first collegiate homer.
But the Gusties scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, as Taylor Fish hit a two-out double and scored on a single by Erik Sveen.
Trent Anderson (SR, Eagan, Minn.) hit a double to lead off the seventh inning for the Auggies, one of eight hits for the Auggies in the first game. Sveen went 4-for-5 at the plate for the Gusties in the first game, while Fish and Drew Block had three hits each.
Augsburg has a nonconference game against the Division I University of Minnesota on Tuesday (4/3) at 6:35 p.m. at the Metrodome, then returns to MIAC play with a doubleheader against St. Thomas on Wednesday (4/4) at 2:30 p.m. at Parade Stadium -- the first of four straight home doubleheaders for the Auggies.
