Auggies split with Mayville State

MINNEAPOLIS -- Tanner Oakes (FY, Jordan, Minn.) threw a complete game no-hitter in his second collegiate start to lead the Augsburg College baseball team to a 2-0 win in game one of a nonconference doubleheader against Mayville State University (N.D.) on Friday night at the Metrodome. Mayville State won game two by a score of 6-2 to salvage a split in the doubleheader.

Oakes' no-hitter is the first by and Auggie pitcher during Keith Bateman's nine seasons as the head coach at Augsburg. In just his second collegiate outing, Oakes struck out seven and did not issue a walk while facing twenty-six Mayville State batters.

A two-run fifth inning gave Oakes all the support he would need in game one. Adam Carl (SO, Eagan, Minn.) singled with one out in the fifth and came around to score on a hit and run play by Trent Anderson (SR, Eagan, Minn.) to plate the first Augsburg run of the game. The Auggies were able to tack on a second run moments later after Mayville State misplayed a Taylor McMurray (FY, Vadnais Heights, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) bunt that allowed Anderson to score their second and final run of the contest.

McMurray went 2-3 with and RBI in game one, while teammate Adam Seaman (SR, Richfield, Minn.) went 1-2 with a double.

Nick Anderson was the pitcher of record for Mayville in game one, as he struck out eight and allowed four hits in five innings of work.

Augsburg jumped out to a 2-1 lead through five innings in game two, but was not able to hold on as Mayville took advantage of a five run sixth inning to win game two 6-2 and salvage a split in the two game series.

The Auggies scored two runs and threatened to break the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Mayville State relief pitcher Victor Sokolofsky was able to escape a bases loaded jam without enduring any more damage.

Ethan Imdieke (JR, Mounds View, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) led the Augsburg offensive attack in game two, as he went 2-3 and scored a run. Tim Gerding (SR, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS), Brent Kolbow (JR, Forest Lake, Minn.) and Lou LaChapelle (JR, Eagan, Minn.) each recorded singles for the Auggies in game two.

Augsburg starting pitcher Daniel Tombers (FY, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) struck out one and walked one in three innings of work, while Adam Langer (SR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) worked two innings of scoreless relief without allowing a base hit.

Brad Ferraro led Mayville at the plate as he went 1-4 with a two run home run.

Augsburg will return to the Metrodome Wednesday (3/14) to take on the University of Wisconsin-Superior in a non-conference double header. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
