MINNEAPOLIS -- Adam Carl (SO, Eagan, Minn.) went 5-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader and drove in the game-winning run in the first game, and Ryan Mestnik (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) improved to 8-0 on the season with his fourth complete-game pitching effort of the season in the second game, as the Augsburg College baseball team claimed a doubleheader sweep of Concordia College-Moorhead in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Parade Stadium.

Augsburg (21-8 overall, 7-3 MIAC) claimed the sweep of Concordia (12-13 overall, 4-6 MIAC) with a 5-4 win in the first game and a 4-1 win in the second game. The Auggies have now won six games in a row.

Augsburg's 21 wins are its most since the 2010 season and marks the fourth time the Auggies have recorded 20-plus wins in head coach Keith Bateman's nine seasons at Augsburg. His Auggie teams have recorded double-digit win totals in each of his nine seasons.

The 21-8 record is Augsburg's best after its first 29 games since Augsburg went 24-5 in the 1987, en route to an MIAC regular-season championship, NCAA Division III national playoff appearance, and a 31-10 overall mark.

Carl went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the first game, and went 3-for-3 with two RBI in the second game. Carl has gone 9-for-13 (.692) with five RBI and three doubles in his last four games.

Meanwhile, Mestnik threw his fourth complete game of the season in the second game, striking out five while walking one and allowing five hits. He threw 101 pitches -- 69 strikes -- to improve to 8-0 on the season, becoming just the second MIAC pitcher to improve to 8-0 (Steve Maher of St. Thomas is the other).

Throwing a team-high 49.1 innings in 10 appearances (nine starts) on the season, Mestnik has struck out 22 while walking eight, allowing just four runs (all earned) this season -- a 0.73 earned-run average that is the lone sub-1.00 ERA among MIAC regulars in overall statistics (pitchers with more than 15.0 innings pitched this season).

Augsburg built a 4-0 lead in the first game, scoring three runs in the third inning and another run in the fifth. All three runs in the third inning were unearned, as the Auggies took advantage of two errors to keep the inning alive. Lou LaChapelle (JR, Eagan, Minn.) drove in two runs on a triple, and Ryan Sward (SO, Eagan, Minn.) drove in another run on a double. In the fifth, Tom Petersen (SR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) plated LaChapelle on a single.

But Concordia tied the game with four runs in the top of the sixth. Braden Rahman (SO, Moorhead, Minn.) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, a Brian Guler (JR, New Rockford, N.D.) triple plated two runs, and Guler scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the seventh, LaChapelle walked, and moved to second on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Sward. With one out, Carl singled to left to drive home LaChapelle with the game-winning run.

LaChapelle, Sward and Carl had two hits each for the Auggies in the first game, with LaChapelle scoring three of the five Auggie runs. Gordon Kappers (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) hit a double for the Auggies. Michael Olson (JR, Monticello, Minn.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Cobbers.

Tanner Oakes (FY, Jordan, Minn.) picked up the pitching win for Augsburg in relief of starter Eren Cur (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS). Oakes struck out two while not allowing a hit in 1.1 innings of relief, while Cur struck out three while walking two and allowing seven hits in 5.2 innings in his ninth start of the year.

Concordia pitcher Zach Frappier (SR, Fargo, N.D./Shanley HS) struck out four while walking two in a losing effort. Just one of the five runs charged to him were earned.

Augsburg jumped out to an early lead in the second game, as Sward hit a double to drive in Brent Kolbow (JR, Forest Lake, Minn.) and Carl singled to bring home Sward in the first inning. Concordia cut the lead to 2-1 in the second, as Olson hit a ground-rule double and came home on a sacrifice fly by Luke Kramer (SR, Hector, Minn./Buffalo Lake-Hector HS)

Augsburg plated a run in the third inning, as Petersen doubled and scored on a single by Carl. Another run came across in the fifth, as Petersen scored on an RBI single by Kappers.

In addition to Carl's 3-for-3 effort in the second game, Petersen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Kolbow went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Michael Olson and Brad Olson (SR, Richmond, Minn./ROCORI HS) hit doubles for Concordia.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (4/18) with the first of four straight doubleheaders on the road, a 2:30 p.m. twinbill at Carleton. Concordia returns to action on Tuesday (4/17) at 4 p.m. with a single nonconference game at home against Valley City State (N.D.).
