Auggies drop pair at Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Tom Petersen (SR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) went 5-for-7 at the plate to lead Augsburg College, but the Auggie baseball team saw its six-game winning streak snapped with a doubleheader loss at Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday afternoon at Carleton's Mel Taube Field.

Carleton (12-15 overall, 4-6 MIAC) claimed a 9-3 win over Augsburg (21-10 overall, 7-5 MIAC) in the first game, then completed the sweep with an 8-2 win in the second game.

Big innings proved to be the difference in both games. In the first game, Carleton overcame a 3-2 Augsburg lead with a five-run fifth inning, sending nine batters to the plate. In the second game, Carleton scored six runs in the first inning, sending 12 batters to the plate.

Petersen went 3-for-4 in the first game with a double, run scored and an RBI, while scoring a run on a 1-for-3 effort in the second game. Adam Carl (SO, Eagan, Minn.) went 3-for-7 with two RBI in the doubleheader, and Tim Gerding (SR, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) had a double and run scored in the second game.

Gerding, Lou LaChapelle (JR, Eagan, Minn.), Trent Anderson (SR, Eagan, Minn.) and Ryan Sward (SO, Eagan, Minn.) had two hits each for the Auggies in the doubleheader.

In the first game, Augsburg scored two runs in the first inning, with Petersen driving in a run on a double and Carl hitting a single to bring in a run. The Auggies also scored in the fifth, as Carl drove in another run on a single.

In the second game, Augsburg scored a run in the second inning, as Petersen walked and came around to score on a fielder's choice RBI by Gordon Kappers (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS). In the seventh inning, Gerding doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by LaChapelle.

Jeff Dsida went 3-for-6 at the plate with a double, triple, four RBI and three runs scored to lead Carleton in the doubleheader. Ray Yong went 4-for-7 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored, and Nolan Baker went 3-for-7 with two RBI and a run scored.

For the Knights, Anderson Cole claimed the first-game win with five innings of work, with Jackson Tears pitching two innings of scoreless relief. Paul Dimick scored a complete-game win in the second game, striking out three.

Both teams return to action with road doubleheaders on Saturday (4/21) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Bethel and Carleton playing at St. Olaf.
