MINNEAPOLIS –
Ryan Minder (FY, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) made his first collegiate start for Augsburg College and claimed three strikeouts in the Auggies' 7-1 loss to the Division I University of Minnesota in a nonconference baseball game on Tuesday evening at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Making his second collegiate pitching appearance for Division III Augsburg (15-6 overall), Minder struck out three while walking one and allowing five hits in three innings of work.
Augsburg used four pitchers in the game, with
Jarron Farah (SR, Minneapolis, Minn.),
Jonathan Wulff (SR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) and
John Gallice (FY, St. Louis Park, Minn.) pitching in relief. Gallice struck out two while allowing a run in three innings of relief.
After two scoreless innings, the Gophers (17-13 overall) scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning. After two hits and a walk loaded the bases, Kurt Schlangen cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right field. The Gophers scored three more runs in the fourth inning -- all unearned -- on two walks, two errors and two sacrifice flies. A bases-loaded walk plated a run in the sixth inning.
Augsburg scored its lone run of the game in the eighth inning.
Tim Gerding (SR, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS) singled and advanced to third after
Taylor McMurray (FY, Vadnais Heights, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) singled and moved to second on an error. Gerding then scored on a wild pitch.
Tom Petersen (SR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS),
Adam Carl (SO, Eagan, Minn.) and
Alec Johnson (SR, Marine on St. Croix, Minn./Forest Lake HS) also had base hits for Augsburg.
Brent Kolbow (JR, Forest Lake, Minn.) had a stolen base, making him a perfect 9-for-9 in stolen bases so far this season.
Schlangen and Matt Puhl had two hits each for Minnesota, which collected seven hits in the game. Matt Puhl had a double for the Gophers.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with the first of two doubleheaders against last season's MIAC regular-season co-champions on Wednesday (4/3) at 2:30 p.m., facing St. Thomas at Parade Stadium. The Auggies host Macalester on Saturday (4/6) at 1 p.m.
