BOXSCORE ST. PAUL, Minn. --
Gottlieb Uahengo (SR, Windhoek, Namibia/St. George's College) and
Chad Gilmer (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored goals four minutes apart in the second half, rallying Augsburg College to a 2-1 victory over Pacific Lutheran University (Wash.) in a nonconference men's soccer game at Hamline University's Pat Paterson Field on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 1-0 to the Lutes 10 minutes into the second half, Uahengo scored his first goal of the season on a shot from Gilmer and
Danny Osip (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS). Just 3:58 later, Gilmer scored his first goal of the year on a shot assisted by
Tyler Heaps (SR, St. Paul, Minn./DeLaSalle HS).
"We did very well on short rest after a double overtime game yesterday," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "More players were involved, as three first-years made debuts and both
Casey Powell (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) and
Matt Knutson (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) saw their first minutes of the season. For me,
Sam Foy (FY, Madison, Wis./Madison LaFollette HS) was the player who contributed the most -- his insertion at the half allowed Chad to get forward, and it didn't take long for that to impact the game. Gilmer immediately knocked down
Danny Osip's service for 'G' to finish off, and then four minutes later, cleaned up a Tyler Heap's free kick for his first goal of the season. All this while Foy dealt with a challenging matchup with Emmanuel Amarh."
Goalkeeper
Clayton Lynch (JR, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) collected three saves for Augsburg, now 1-0-1 on the season.
The Auggies had two nonconference games against the defending co-champions of the Northwest Conference during Hamline's Twin Cities Kickoff Classic event. The Auggies tied Whitworth (Wash.) 0-0 on Friday. Pacific Lutheran (1-1-0 overall), ranked No. 25 in the
National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire Division III preseason national poll, was picked to finish first in the conference in its preseason coaches poll, with Whitworth picked for second. The Lutes competed in last season's NCAA Division III national tournament.
Pacific Lutheran outshot Augsburg by a 5-1 margin in the first half and took the lead with an unassisted goal in the 32nd minute by Emmanuel Amarh (FY, Sarpsbig, Norway). But Augsburg outshot Pacific Lutheran by a 5-2 margin in the second half, with Uahengo's goal coming at the 55:02 mark and Gilmer's goal coming at the 59:00 mark. Augsburg also withstood an 11-3 Pacific Lutheran advantage in corner kicks in the game.
"Gilmer dominated the air on PLU's corner kicks -- there was just no getting through him today. He was going to do his part to win this game no matter what. He is a real competitor and a true talent," Holker said. "
Tanner McCarthy (SO, Windsor Heights, Iowa/Dowling HS) shook off some recent struggles and played very well. He was active, commanding, and effective with the ball."
The Auggies return to action with three games on the road in the next week -- Tuesday (9/4) at 4 p.m. at Wisconsin-Superior, next Saturday (9/8) at 1 p.m. at Concordia-Wisconsin, and next Sunday (9/9) at 1 p.m. at the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
"Overall it was a very productive weekend for us, and that should help our conference as well," Holker said. "Now it's time to analyze how we can be better and then prepare ourselves for a busy week in Wisconsin. On top of that, classes begin on Wednesday so there is a lot of detail to pay attention to."
