BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS --
Bri Clark (SR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) scored two goals for the Augsburg Women's soccer team but it wasn't enough to hold off a tough Loras College team as the Auggies fell 3-2 in a double overtime heartbreaker. The loss is the first of the year for the Auggies, while Loras moves to 4-3-0 overall with the win.
"Obviously a tough loss. Anytime you have a solid team like Loras down 2-0 at home in the second half and don't close out the game you are left unfulfilled," stated Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre.
The Auggies were able to strike first as
Molly Allen (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) served a nice cross and
Bri Clark put a header to the far post at the 21:54 mark of the first period to give Augsburg a 1-0 lead. The Auggies were able to maintain their stong play and took a 1-0 lead into the lockerroom at the half, outshooting Loras 7-5 in the period.
Clark and Allen connected again for the Auggies in the second half as Allen served a corner kick and Clark put the ball past the goalie off a deflection, giving Augsburg a 2-0 advantage just two minutes into the second half.
Loras answered back with an unassisted goal by Kristina Everding off a corner kick in the 67th minute and a throw in goal by Katie Truesdale to tie the game at 2-2 in the 85th minute. The Auggies fought off two corner kicks in the final three minutes to force the extra session.
Augsburg outshot Loras 5-0 in the first overtime session, and had a corner kick opportunity in the 98th minute but wasn't able to get one past the Loras keeper. In the second overtime Loras claimed a 2-0 advantage in shots, including the game-winner, a header by Katie Truesdale at the 108:44 mark.
"We talked about the importance of restarts and yet gave up goals off a corner kick, throw-in, and a free kick. The last of which came in the final minute of the second OT," commented Navarre.
Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (9/94) at 7:30 p.m. as they travel across town to take on Macalester College in a key MIAC matchup.
"We are all disappointed and frustrated. However, we will bounce back and be ready for another classic against our rival Macalester on Wednesday"
