Auggies fall to Tommies in OT

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS – A goal with 1:15 left in the first overtime gave the University of St. Thomas a 1-0 victory over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer contest on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

Augsburg goalkeeper Katie Gajewski (JR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) claimed six saves in goal for Augsburg (5-3-0 overall, 1-2-0 MIAC). St. Thomas (4-3-0 overall, 3-0-0 MIAC) outshot Augsburg by a 14-11 margin in the game.

Rosie Nelson (FY, Duluth, Minn./East HS) scored the lone goal of the game in the 99th minute, sending a high fly ball from 30 yards out that just cleared Gajewski's outstretched arms and into the net.

The game was a defensive battle, with both goalkeepers having solid games. Tori Shepard (SO, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) had six saves in goal for St. Thomas.

Augsburg had two solid chances to score in the first half, as a header by Carly Reimer (SR, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) in the 20th minute was saved by a diving Shepard. In the 42nd minute, a header by Marie Fitzgerald (FY, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) hit the crossbar.

"We played hard today," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "We had our chances to win and did not fully execute. It was obviously a tightly contested game and unfortunately, we just gave up a goal we shouldn't have in overtime."

Molly Allen (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) had three shots for the Auggies, while Reimer, Fitzgerald and Olivia Muyres (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) had two shots each.

Augsburg returns to action on Monday (9/24) at 4 p.m. with a nonconference game at Wisconsin-River Falls.

"There is a lot of soccer left, but we have to start winning these close games if we are going to be contenders," Navarre said. "We have three opportunities next week, starting with a nonconference game on Monday at UW-River Falls."
