MINNEAPOLIS -- Claiming a 27-1 advantage in shots, the Augsburg College women's soccer team dominated from start to finish in a 3-0 victory over the University of Minnesota-Morris in a nonconference game on Monday evening at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Olivia Muyres (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS),
Carly Reimer (SR, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and
Brooke Vroman (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) scored goals for Augsburg (2-0-0 overall), which has outscored its opponents 5-0 in its first two games.
"I thought we started a little slow, which was disappointing, but we definitely got stronger as the game went on, which was encouraging," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "Although we are getting results and keeping clean sheets, I know we can play better. That being said, there were a lot of positives tonight."
Augsburg controlled possession throughout the game, outshooting Minnesota-Morris 16-1 in the first half and 10-0 in the second half. Rikki Beaver (SR, North Branch, Minn.) had seven saves in goal for Minnesota-Morris (0-2-0 overall).
The Auggies struck first in the 17th minute, as Muyres scored her second goal of the season, completing a crisp passing play from
Abi Rodstein (SO, Eagan, Minn.) and
Marie Fitzgerald (FY, Fort Atkinson, Wis.). Fitzgerald claimed her first collegiate point in the process.
In the 76th minute, Augsburg earned a penalty shot, which Reimer converted for her first goal of the year. Six minutes later, Vroman scored her second collegiate goal, collecting a free kick by
Alekzandra Miller (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) off a deflection in the box and putting it home.
Katie Gajewski (JR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) had the lone save in goal for the Auggies during the first half.
Lexi Felix (FY, Kailua, Hawaii/Iolani HS) saw her first collegiate action in goal for the Auggies in the second half.
"It was great to get first-year
Lexi Felix some time in goal. We have high expectations for our keepers and she proved up to the task," Navarre said. "In fact, we were able to get all of our first-year players some time, which is great for everyone going forward. We will look to continue to play a lot of players this week, as we need to manage minutes and make sure we are doing our due diligence to have everyone prepared for the duration of the season."
Augsburg returns to action on Thursday (9/6) at 7 p.m., with a nonconference game at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minn.
"Bethany Lutheran provides our first road test this year on Thursday. Hopefully, we will be a little sharper in the final third and start putting more of the pieces together," Navarre said.
