Auggies overpower Bethany Lutheran

MANKATO, Minn. -- Rachel Nelson (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored two goals and added an assist, and Bri Clark (SR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) had a goal and assist, as the Augsburg College women's soccer team claimed a 6-0 victory over host Bethany Lutheran College in a nonconference contest on Thursday evening.

The six goals were the most scored by Augsburg in a single game since a 6-0 win over Hamline on Oct. 24, 2009. Augsburg, now 3-0-0 overall, has outscored its opponents by an 11-0 margin on the season.

Augsburg outshot Bethany Lutheran (0-2-1 overall) by a 24-9 margin, including a 14-0 margin in the second half. Lexi Felix (FY, Kailua, Hawaii/Iolani HS), making her first collegiate start in goal for Augsburg, collected three saves for the shutout victory.

The Auggies scored twice in the first nine minutes of the game, as Marie Fitzgerald (FY, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) scored her first collegiate goal, assisted by Clark, at the 5:58 mark and Clark scored from Molly Allen (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) three minutes later. Nelson scored her first goal of the game in the 44th minute, assisted by Alekzandra Miller (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) and Carly Reimer (SR, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS).

Augsburg scored three more goals in a 4:42 mark during the second half. Brooke Vroman (SO, Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) scored her second goal of the season at the 77:55 mark, assisted by Nelson. Taylor Kuramoto (SO, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS), a transfer from St. Olaf, scored her first goal in an Auggie uniform, an unassisted goal, 1:23 later, and Nelson scored her second goal of the game, also unassisted, at the 82:37 mark.

Through the first week of the season, Augsburg's 11 goals is tied with St. Catherine for the most goals amond Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams in overall play, while it is one of only three MIAC teams that has yet to allow a goal this season.

Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (9/8) at 1 p.m., hosting Grinnell (Iowa) at Edor Nelson Field.
