Auggies improve to 4-0

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Claiming a 20-7 advantage in shots, the Augsburg College women's soccer team improved to 4-0 overall with its fourth straight shutout victory, a 4-0 triumph over Grinnell College (Iowa) in nonconference play on Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Bri Clark (SR, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka) had a goal and an assist for the Auggies, who have outscored their opponents by a 15-0 margin through the first four games of the campaign.

The Auggies have been dominant in their first four wins. In addition to the 15-0 scoring margin, the Auggies have claimed a 95-21 advantage in shots, 48-10 advantage in shots-on-goal and a 24-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Augsburg scored twice in the first nine minutes of play to take an early advantage. Olivia Muyres (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) scored her third goal of the season at the 4:18 mark, collecting a loose ball in front and putting it home. Clark and Abi Rodstein (SO, Eagan, Minn.) were credited with assists. At the 8:06 mark, Carly Reimer (SR, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) scored her second goal of the year, launching a free kick into the net from 25 yards out.

"We had a great start to the game, getting two early goals, which obviously helped," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "I thought Carly's strike was the best dead-ball goal I've ever seen on our home field. Our performance dipped during the later stages of the first half, but fortunately the players responded very well to our halftime adjustments and played consistent and secured the game in the second half."

Five minutes into the second half, Clark scored her second goal of the season, finishing off a long sprint with a goal on an assist by Molly Allen (SO, Stillwater, Minn.). The Auggies closed the scoring in the 83rd minute, as Rachel Nelson (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored her third goal of the year, finishing off a pass from Marie Fitzgerald (FY, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) with a shot that deflected off the right pipe and into the net.

Katie Gajewski (JR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) improved to 3-0 on the season with her second shutout of the season and 11th of her Auggie goalkeeping career, collecting two saves.

For Grinnell (0-2-1 overall), Nicole Sipfle (SR, West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS) and Andie Semlow (FY, Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg HS) had two shots each. Goalkeeper Jordan Young (JR, Maplewood, Minn./North HS) had three saves in the first half, with Katy Oldach (FY, Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest HS) claiming four saves in relief in the second half.

Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Tuesday (9/11) at 4 p.m., with a game at Bethel University.

"While it is a great start to the season, we all know how difficult the MIAC is, and we expect a highly contested game against a strong Bethel team on Tuesday," Navarre said.
