NWCA NATIONAL DUALS LIVE RESULTS (TRACKWRESTLING)

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The Augsburg College wrestling team went 1-2 in its competition at the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III National Duals on Saturday at the Prairie Capital Convention Center.

Augsburg (3-2 overall), ranked No. 4 in the latest NWCA Division III national poll, opened with a 24-12 victory over No. 26-ranked Springfield (Mass.), but fell 19-15 to No. 5-ranked Centenary (N.J.) in the quarterfinals. The Auggies were then edged 22-20 by Johnson and Wales (R.I.) in the consolation quarterfinals.

Three Auggies won all three of their matches on the day -- No. 4-ranked 125-pounder Mike Fuenffinger (SO, Hibbing, Minn.), 197-pounder Matt Hechsel (SO, Apple Valley, Minn.) and top-ranked heavyweight Chad Johnson (JR, Ferryville, Wis./DeSoto HS).

Fuenffinger improved to 18-2 on the season with three victories, scoring a first-period pin against Centenary and a major-decision against Johnson and Wales. Hechsel improved to 17-5 on the season with three wins, including a technical fall against Springfield and a major-decision win against Johnson and Wales.

Defending NCAA Division III national champion Johnson improved to 19-1 on the season with three wins, including a first-period pin in the victory against Springfield and a second-period pin against Johnson and Wales. Of his 19 victories this season, 14 are bonus-point victories (nine pins, five major decisions). Johnson is now 87-13 in his three seasons at Augsburg.

Augsburg 149-pounder Rashad Kennedy (SO, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley) and 174-pounder Josh Kohler (SR, Monticello, Minn.) won two matches on the afternoon.

Augsburg returns to action next weekend with three events. Next Saturday (1/19) at 9 a.m., the Augsburg White Team (junior varsity) will compete in two meets in Iowa, at the Cornell (Iowa) Matman Open and the Central (Iowa) Invitational. Next Sunday (1/20) at 2 p.m., the Auggie varsity will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., for a dual meet at Augustana (S.D.).

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- No. 4-seed Augsburg College will compete at the National Wrestling Coaches Association/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals, presented by Hibiclens and The Marines, this weekend at the Prairie Capital Center in Springfield, Ill.

Auggie action begins on Saturday at 11 a.m., as No. 4-ranked Augsburg faces No. 26-ranked Springfield (Mass.), and will face either No. 5 Centenary (N.J.) or No. 13 Luther (Iowa) on Saturday at 3 p.m. Action will continue both Saturday and Sunday, with the Division III championship match slated for Sunday at 3 p.m.

Fourteen of the 16 teams in the Division III field are ranked in the top 30 in the latest NWCA Division III national poll, with all of the top 10-ranked teams represented in the field.

Since the NWCA began the Division III National Duals in 2002, the trophy has rested at either Augsburg or Wartburg (Iowa). Augsburg has won the title five times (2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010), while Wartburg has won the crown six times (2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012). Augsburg has placed second at the National Duals four times (2003, 2004, 2006, 2012) and placed third twice (2008, 2011).

Augsburg is 38-6 in NWCA Division III National Duals competition since 2002. Augsburg also appeared in five NWCA National Duals competitions prior to the 2002 season, when the defending Division III national champion was invited to compete with Division I squads. Augsburg is 43-15 all-time in NWCA National Duals competition.

In its 44 Division III National Duals meets, Augsburg has outscored its competition by a 1,326-451 margin, an average score of 30.1 to 10.3.
