Auggies edged by Johnnies 30-28

BOXSCORE COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- Jerise Washington (JR, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns, and Joey Sonnenfeld (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) caught seven passes for 131 yards and a score for Augsburg College, but the Auggies dropped a 30-28 decision to host Saint John's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday afternoon at Clemens Stadium.

Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) caught five passes for 82 yards and a touchdown for Augsburg (3-2 overall, 2-2 MIAC), while Ayrton Scott (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) completed 23-of-34 passes for 304 yards and two touchdowns.

Sonnenfeld recorded his second 100-yard receiving game in his five contests as an Auggie after transferring from Division I North Dakota State. His eight receiving touchdowns are tops among MIAC receivers in overall statistics. Washington, who rushed for 140 yards in last season's 48-17 Auggie win over the Johnnies, recorded his fourth career 100-yard rushing game with his 130-yard effort.

Augsburg outgained Saint John's (5-1 overall, 3-1 MIAC) by a 468-306 margin, but turned the ball over seven times -- two interceptions and five fumbles lost. Two of the turnovers led to Johnnie touchdowns on their ensuing drives.

The Johnnie defense limited Augsburg quarterback Scott -- who had entered the contest ranked No. 3 in the conference in both rushing (126.0 yards per-game) and passing (235.8 yards per-game) yardage per-game -- to zero net rushing yards on just five carries. It marked the first time in Scott's 16-game collegiate career that he was held to fewer than 56 yards or 15 carries.

Augsburg sprinted out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Sonnenfeld capped a seven-play, 50-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown reception from Scott, and following a fumble recovery by Michael Juberian (JR, Richfield, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) at the Johnnie 33-yard line, Washington rushed 33 yards for a touchdown.

Saint John's scored the next 27 points to take a 27-14 lead into the locker room at halftime. Sam Sura capped an eight-play, 69-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run, and after the Johnnies recovered an Augsburg fumble, a nine-play, 35-yard drive endd on a five-yard touchdown pass from Connor Bruns to Brandon Schaust.

An Augsburg drive stalled on downs at the Saint John's 37-yard line, and six plays later, the Johnnies scored on a 28-yard touchdown run by Jakob Certeza. Following an interception on the next Augsburg drive, Sura scored his second touchdown of the afternoon, rushing two yards to end a five-play, 25-yard drive with 25 seconds left in the first half.

In the third quarter, an interception by Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) at midfield set up an Auggie score, as six plays later, Washington scored on a 21-yard run with 7:45 left in the frame. Washington now has 14 receiving touchdowns in his career, tied for seventh-most in school history.

The Johnnies took a 30-21 advantage at the 9:13 mark of the fourth quarter, as Alexi Johnson connected on a 34-yard field goal. On the ensuing kickoff, a 46-yard return by Erickson Saye (SO, Brooklyn Center, Minn./Fridley HS) gave the Auggies the ball at the Saint John's 43-yard line. A 37-yard completion from Scott to Sonnenfeld put the ball on the Johnnie 6, but five plays later, the Auggies surrendered the ball at the Johnnie 1 on a fumble. The Auggie defense held firm and forced a punt, but the return was fumbled back to the Johnnies near midfield.

A Johnnie punt gave the Auggies the ball at their own 6-yard line, and Augsburg drove 94 yards on nine plays in just 2:28 -- their second 90-yard-plus drive of the season. The drive was capped by a 28-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Carl with 1:21 remaining. An onside kick attempt was recovered by Saint John's, and the Johnnies were able to run out the clock for the win.

Two Auggies reached career milestones in the game. With his 82 receiving yards, Carl went over the 1,500-yard barrier. He now has 1,565 career receiving yards on 138 receptions and 16 receiving touchdowns. With 34 rushing yards on 10 carries, Phil Putratz (SR, Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) went over the 1,000-yard mark for his career. He now has 1,027 rushing yards on 211 career carries.

Bruns finished with 148 yards passing for Saint John's, competing 13-of-26 passes. Josh Bungum caught five passes for 47 yards, while Rob Voshell caught three passes for 55 yards. Sura rushed 21 times for 86 yards, while Certeza rushed 17 times for 54 yards. Carter Hanson had 11 tackles (seven solo) for the Johnnies.

Defensively, Juberian and Felix Coleman (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) had 14 tackles (seven solo) each, with Juberian recording 2.0 tackles for-loss. A transfer from St. Thomas, Juberian has recorded double-digit tackle totals in each of his five games as an Auggie, and now leads the MIAC's overall statistics in tackles per-game (14.2) and total tackles (71).

Both teams return to MIAC play next Saturday (10/17) at 1 p.m., as Augsburg hosts St. Olaf at Edor Nelson Field and Saint John's plays at Carleton.
