Augsburg falls 47-20 at No. 22 Concordia

BOXSCORE MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Joey Sonnenfeld (SO, Maple Grove,Minn./Osseo HS) recorded his third 100-yard receiving performance of the season with an eight-catch, 134-yard effort, but his Augsburg College football team fell short in a 47-20 loss to Concordia College-Moorhead in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Jake Christiansen Stadium.

Ayrton Scott (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) completed 21-of-40 passing for 292 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for a score for Augsburg (4-3 overall, 3-3 MIAC).

Linebacker Michael Juberian (JR, Richfield, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS), the conference's overall leader in tackles, claimed his seventh straight double-digit tackle game with a 15-tackle (eight solo) effort. The lone MIAC player to reach the century mark in overall tackles (107) so far this season, he has 23 more tackles than the second-place person in the league's overall tackle standings. He entered Saturday's game ranked second nationally among NCAA Division III players in tackles per-game (15.3).

Concordia (6-1 overall, 4-1 MIAC), ranked No. 22 in both major Division III national polls (D3football.com and the American Football Coaches Association), outgained Augsburg by a 430-380 margin. The Cobbers scored 27 straight points to overcome an early 6-0 deficit, taking a 27-12 lead into the locker room at halftime. Concordia also took advantage of four Augsburg turnovers, each of which led to Concordia scored on their ensuing drives. Two Auggie interceptions led to Cobber touchdowns on their next drives, and the Cobbers scored second-half field goals on drives following an interception and fumble.

Jerise Washington (JR, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) opened the scoring for the Auggies with a one-yard touchdown run with 10:23 left in the first quarter, capping an eight-play, 60-yard drive that included a 50-yard pass from Scott to tight end Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.).

The Cobbers scored touchdowns on four straight drives in the first half -- a one-yard scoring run by Matt Peterson, a 47-yard touchdown pass from Griffin Neal to Brandon Zylstra, a 22-yard touchdown pass from Neal to Mark Whiting, and a 36-yard scoring run by Domenic Fraboni. 

Augsburg used an 11-play, 64-yard drive to cut into the lead just before halftime, capped by a six-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) with 17 seconds left in the second quarter. Playing both defensive back and wide receiver, Bourne-McFarlane had an interception in the game, along with six tackles (one solo).

Concordia expanded its lead to 37-12, scoring on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Neal to Whiting, and on a 24-yard field goal by Benjamin Wagner. Augsburg cut the lead to 37-20 on an 11-yard touchdown run by Scott, combined with a two-point conversion pass from Scott to Carl, with 12:48 remaining, but the Cobbers scored twice more, on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Neal to Joe Baune, and on a 31-yard field goal by Wagner.

Carl caught four passes for 71 yards for the Auggies, while Phil Putratz (SR, Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) rushed 15 times for 67 yards and caught six passes for 50 yards.

Neal completed 19-of-21 passes for 271 yards and four touchdowns for the Cobbers, with Zylstra and Whiting each catching five passes, both for 86 yards. Baune caught five passes for 69 yards. Fraboni rushed five times for 60 yards, and Neal rushed 19 times for 43 yards.

Defensively, Lincoln Buege (SR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) had nine tackles (one solo) for Augsburg, while Felix Coleman (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) had eight tackles (four solo). Spencer Corey (JR, Baldwin, Wis./Baldwin-Woodville HS) had two quarterback sacks in the game for the Auggies.

Tyler Berling had 11 tackles (six solo) for Concordia, with Erik Bye adding eight tackles (three solo) and Luke Peterson adding seven tackles (five solo).

Augsburg returns to MIAC play next Saturday (11/2) at 1:10 p.m., hosting St. Thomas at Edor Nelson Field.
