BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Behind a goal and assist each from
Abi Rodstein (JR, Eagan, Minn.) and
Olivia Muyres (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS), the Augsburg College women's soccer team remained in the hunt for a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs with a 3-1 win over St. Olaf College on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Rodstein broke a 1-1 tie with a blast from the top of the penalty box, scoring her first goal of the season on an assist from Muyres at the 64:37 mark. Muyres added an insurance goal at the 76:05 mark, scoring on a shot from the middle of the box on a feed from Rodstein.
With the win, Augsburg (10-3-4 overall, 6-3-1 MIAC) moves into a fourth-place tie with St. Olaf (8-6-2 overall, 6-3-1 MIAC) in the conference standings, each with 19 conference points (three points for a win, one for a tie) entering the final round of regular-season play on Saturday (11/2). Augsburg travels to face St. Thomas (9-7-1 overall, 5-4-1 MIAC, 16 points) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, while St. Olaf plays at Carleton (8-8-1 overall, 6-4-1 MIAC, 18 points), also at 1 p.m.
Seven teams remain in the running for the three remaining spots in the four-team MIAC postseason playoffs entering Saturday's play, with Saint Benedict (24 points) the lone team to have clinched a playoff berth.
"Our next match is obviously a big one," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "St Thomas is a talented team, which has been a bit unlucky this year in my opinion. It undoubtedly will be a difficult task for us on Saturday."
After a scoreless first half, Augsburg took the lead on a goal from
Carter Denison (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), who picked up her 11th tally of the season at the 47:24 mark. She took a feed from
Molly Allen (JR, Stillwater, Minn.) and slid the ball to the low right corner of the goal.
"We played well tonight," Navarre said. "The players brought a lot of energy to the game and were totally invested. St Olaf is a solid team, very organized and difficult to get behind. I was proud that we responded to the challenge and were able to raise our game in the second half."
The Oles tied the game 10 minutes later, when Kasja Brindley (SO, Lexington, Ky./Paul Laurence Dunbar HS) took advantage of a scramble deep in the penalty box to score. The action moved wide to the right, and a pass from Chelsea Marsh (FY, Grosse Point, Mich./Grosse Point South HS) found Brindley with an open net in front of her.
Rodstein and Muyres then combined for the Auggies' final two goals of the game. With the goal and assist, Muyres continues her record-setting season for the Auggies. Augsburg's single-season record-holder for both goals and points, she now has 19 goals and nine assists for 47 points. Her goal and point totals are both tops
among MIAC players in overall statistics, with her assist totals third-best among conference players.
In her career (55 games), Muyres now stands third in Augsburg history in points (79), tied for second in goals (31) and tied for seventh in assists (17). Meanwhile, Allen stands in third place in school history in with 22 career assists.
Playing in just 14 games this season after missing three games due to injury, Denison now stands fourth among MIAC players in overall goals, and her 23 points are tied for fifth-most among MIAC players. Allen's eight assists are fourth-most among MIAC players.
Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 13-9 margin in the game.
Katie Gajewski (SR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) had four saves in goal for the Auggies, while Nora Forbes (SR, Edina, Minn.) had two saves for St. Olaf.
