Bourne-McFarlane returns 2 kicks for TDs in season finale

BOXSCORE NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) returned two kickoffs for touchdowns for Augsburg College, but the Auggies dropped a 49-45 decision to host Carleton College in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football season-finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Laird Stadium.

Jerise Washington (JR, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns, while catching eight passes for 65 yards for the Auggies, who finished their season at 5-5 overall, 3-5 in MIAC play.

Augsburg completed its third straight finish of .500 or above, marking the fifth time in the 81 seasons of Auggie football that the feat has been accomplished. In addition to finishing at .500 or above over the past three seasons, the feat also occured in 1927-29, 1972-74, 1993-95 and 1997-99. As a group, Augsburg's 16-player senior class finished its four-year career with a 22-18 record.

Carleton, which also finished 5-5 overall and 3-5 in MIAC play, rallied from a 35-14, third-quarter deficit to claim the victory. John Baker rushed for four touchdowns for the Knights, including three in the second half. He had 31 carries for 98 yards in the game.

Bourne-McFarlane rushed back two kickoff returns for touchdowns -- an 86-yarder in the second quarter and an 87-yarder in the fourth quarter. He ended up with three kick returns for 193 yards in the game, setting a single-game school record for kickoff return yardage. He broke the old record of 176 yards on eight returns, set by Bob Dorgan in a 1979 Augsburg game against Concordia.

Augsburg quarterback Ayrton Scott (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) completed 24-of-46 passes for 297 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for a one-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Joey Sonnenfeld (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) caught nine passes for 128 yards and a touchdown.

Sonnenfeld's 27-yard touchdown reception from Scott in the second quarter was his MIAC-leading 13th of the season, the fifth-most touchdown receptions in a single season in Augsburg history. His 108.7 receiving yards per-game also led the MIAC in overall statistics during the regular season.

Phil Putratz (JR, Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) rushed 10 times for 57 yards for the Auggies, while tight end Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) caught three passes for 63 yards. Marques Townsend (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) had two interceptions for the Auggies on defense.

Augsburg was outgained by a 452-to-447 margin by Carleton -- just the third time the Auggies were outgained by an opponent this season. Augsburg had a 150-143 rushing yardage advantage, but the Knights held a 309-297 passing yardage advantage.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Auggies outscored the Knights 28-14 the second quarter. One-yard touchdown runs by Washington and Scott gave the Auggies an early edge, but Connor Lynch threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Chase Gottschalk to cut the advantage to 14-7. Bourne-McFarlane ran back his first kickoff return for a touchdown for the Auggies, but Baker responded with a two-yard touchdown run for the Knights. Sonnenfeld's 27-yard touchdown reception from Scott closed the half with the Auggies leading 28-14.

Augsburg extended its lead to 35-14 on Washington's three-yard touchdown run with 11:13 left in the third quarter, but the Knights held the Augsburg offense to just a 31-yard field goal by Brandon Searle (FY, Dresser, Wis./St. Croix Falls HS) the rest of the way, with Bourne-McFarlane's second kickoff return touchdown the only other Auggie score in the second half.

Meanwhile, Baker scored touchdowns on runs of three, two and two yards, Gottschalk rushed for an eight-yard touchdown with 3:17 left to play, and Lynch threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Kemper with 2:13 left to give the Knights the final margin of victory. Augsburg reached the Carleton 23-yard line on its final drive, but a fumble recovered by the Knights' Jonathan Rowe ended the final Auggie threat with 1:08 left.

Lynch completed 18-of-34 passes for 309 yards for the Knights, with seven completions for 131 yards to Kemper and six completions for 104 yards to Gottschalk.

Defensively, Augsburg's Michael Juberian (JR, Richfield, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) had 11 tackles (10 solo) -- his ninth double-digit tackle game in his 10 starts this season. Juberian finished the season with 141 tackles (63 solo), leading the MIAC's overall statistics by 28 tackles over the second-place competitior. Chris DeVet (JR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) had 10 tackles (nine solo), and Felix Coleman (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) had nine tackles (six solo).

For Carleton, Mason Schnarr had 11 tackles (eight solo), while Alexander Polk had nine tackles (six solo) and Nick Herringer had eight tackles (five solo).
