Augsburg closes season with scoreless draw

BOXSCORE ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Augsburg College goalkeeper Katie Gajewski (SR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) collected seven saves in goal to record her 19th career shutout in goal, but neither the Auggies or the University of St. Thomas were able to put the ball in the net in a 0-0, two-overtime tie in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at UST's South Field.

Augsburg (10-3-5 overall, 6-3-2 MIAC) outshot St. Thomas (9-7-2 overall, 5-4-2 MIAC) by a 17-13 margin. Jenny Grahek had 10 saves in goal for St. Thomas to share the shutout with Augsburg's Gajewski.

The draw prevented Augsburg from qualifying for the four-team MIAC postseason tournament. Augsburg finished the 2013 season with 20 conference points, two points short of Concordia-Moorhead and St. Olaf, both tied for third with 22 points.

"The team played hard and created chances to win and secure a spot in the playoff. Unfortunately we just didn't find the back of the net," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "Today hurts. We felt like we could have gone on to win the tournament had we advanced, so it's tough to have the season end in this fashion. However, the future is bright for the program. The players are invested, supportive of each other, and hungry to succeed."

Augsburg outshot St. Thomas by a 12-8 margin in the second half and the 20 minutes of overtime. Marie Fitzgerald (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) had five shots for the Auggies, while Emily Gregg (FY, River Falls, Wis.) had four shots. Taylor Sabrowski had four shots for St. Thomas, with Steph McCartan and Hannah Pawlik recording three shots each.

On a team with 12 first-year players, three sophomores, six juniors and three seniors, Augsburg recorded a double-digit win total for the second straight year and seventh time in Navarre's 15 years as head coach. Augsburg outscored its opponents by a 45-16 margin, while claiming a 0.83 team goals-against-average and seven team shutouts.

"Overall, I'm proud of the group we had this year," Navarre said. "We lost several players to graduation, added 12 first-year players, and still were able to reduce our overall losses and match our MIAC point total from a year ago. Additionally, the overall quality of soccer improved. Nevertheless, not advancing (to the playoffs) stings. A 6-3-2 record got us in last year, but it wasn't enough this time around. We did quite well against the playoff teams, but dropped a couple of games on the road that we needed to get results in."

The game was the final contest for three Auggie seniors. Gajewski played 59 games in goal for the Auggies in her career, with a 1.08 career goals-against-average, .817 save percentage, a 29-18-9 record and 19 shutouts. Defender Alekzandra Miller (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS), an All-MIAC Honorable-Mention selection in 2012, appeared in 71 games with four assists in her career. Forward Rachel Nelson (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) appeared in 61 career games, scoring eight goals with five assists for 21 points.

"I want to thank the seniors. Ali, Katie, and Rachel helped create an environment that brought the players together this year," Navarre said. "In fact, I was both pleased and amazed at how quickly the team bonded. The fact that we were undefeated and nationally ranked after 12 games is a testament to how quickly the leadership of the team brought people together."
