Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) tied a career-high with 29 points, leading the Augsburg College men's basketball team to an 80-73 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior in nonconference action on Friday night at Si Melby Hall. With the win, the Auggies remain unbeaten and move to 3-0 overall, while the Yellowjackets fall to 0-2 overall.
After leading 37-35 at the half, Augsburg was able to grab its largest lead of the night, a seven-point advantage, off a three-pointer by Kornbaum at the 11:46 mark, giving the Auggies a 57-50 advantage. The Yellowjackets were able to put together a run and grabbed a 67-66 lead, their first of the half, off a jumper at the 4:18 mark. Augsburg went up 72-67 off six straight points by
Noah Veach (SR, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS), but Superior cut the Augsburg led to 74-71 with just over two minutes to play. The Auggies were able to outscore the Yellowjackets 6-2 over the final minute to claim the 80-73 victory.
Augsburg was led by Kornbaum's 29-point effort, which tied his career-high set against Carleton (1/9) a year ago. Kornbaum finished 11-of-23 from the floor, while adding four rebounds and an assist. Also scoring in double figures for the Auggies were
Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Veach. Siedlitz finished 7-of-10 from the floor, for 20 points and four assists, while Veach finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Richie Perea (FY, Coloado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) came off the bench and recorded a team-high five assists.
UW-Superior was led by Jarrod Peterson (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS), who finished with a game-high 32 points, on 12-of-19 shooting from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 night at the free-throw line.
For the game, Augsburg shot 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the field, while the Yellowjackets connected on 48.4 percent of their shots. Augsburg claimed a narrow 34-32 advantage on the boards but was able to get to the free throw line 30 times compared to just 10 attempts for Superior.
Augsburg is idle over the Thanksgiving break and returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 4, opening conference play against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival St. Thomas. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.
