Auggies fall 89-81 to No. 12-ranked Warhawks

BOXSCORE FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn.) led all players with 26 points on 12-of-16 shooting from the field, but his Augsburg College men's basketball team could not get past the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, as the Warhawks scored an 89-81 win in a Cruzin Classic game on Saturday afternoon at Nova Southeastern University's Don Taft University Center.

Kornbaum, currently ranked No. 2 among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players in overall scoring with an 18.2 points per-game average, scored 20-plus points for the second straight game and fourth time this season. He also pulled down a team-high six rebounds, while adding three assists and two blocked shots.

Noah Veach (SR, Grand Haven, Mich.), the MIAC's leading scorer with an 18.4 points per-game average, scored 16 points for Augsburg (5-4 overall), including a 9-for-10 effort from the free-throw line. He also added five rebounds and two assists. Joey Sonnenfeld (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) scored a season-high 11 points off the bench.

Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored eight points with five assists for the Auggies, and Richie Perea (FY, Colorado Springs, Colo./Wasson HS) came off the bench to score nine points with three assists and a steal.

Wisconsin-Whitewater (8-2 overall), the No. 12-ranked team in the latest D3hoops.com Division III national rankings, had five players score in double figures. Reggie Hearn scored 16 points with eight rebounds, Eric Bryson scored 16 points, Steve Egan scored 15 points with six rebounds, K.J. Evans scored 14 points with five rebounds, and Quardell Young scored 14 points with five assists.

Both teams had strong shooting efforts in the contest, as Augsburg hit a season-best 59.2 percent (29-of-49) from the field, while UW-Whitewater connected on 55.0 percent (33-of-60) of its shots. The Auggies also connected on 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from beyond the three-point arc. UW-Whitewater outrebounded the Auggies by a 29-22 margin in the game.

However, the Auggies committed 18 turnovers, compared to the Warhawks' 12, and the Warhawks scored 27 points off the Auggie turnovers, while Augsburg scored 13 points off Warhawk turnovers.

A 7-2 run midway through the first half gave UW-Whitewater a seven-point lead at 24-17. The Auggies were able to cut the lead to one point at 38-37 with 2:49 left in the first half on four consecutive free throws by Veach, following a personal foul and technical foul on the Warhawks. But UW-Whitewater outscored Augsburg by a 9-1 margin after that, taking a 47-38 halftime lead.

Augsburg kept pace with UW-Whitewater for much of the second half, cutting the lead to two points on four occasions, the last a 64-66 margin with 10:44 left to play. But the Warhawks used an 11-3 run to take a 10-point lead, 77-67 with 5:33 left, and the Auggies could not cut the lead under five points the rest of the way.

Augsburg is now idle for the holiday break and returns to action on Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m., hosting Saint John's at Si Melby Hall in MIAC play.
