Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) led all players in points, rebounds and blocked shots, as the Augsburg College men's basketball team posted a 71-66 victory over St. Olaf College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
Kornbaum posted 21 points, which included an impressive 10-for-11 shooting performance from the floor, while adding 10 rebounds and five blocked shots to pace Augsburg (4-1 overall, 1-1 MIAC). Also finishing in double figures for Augsburg was
Noah Veach (SR, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) and
Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS). Veach scored 17 points, featuring an 11-of-12 afternoon from the free-throw line, while adding eight rebounds and a career-high eight assists. Seidlitz finished with 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.
After leading 34-31 at the intermission, Augsburg started the second half on an 11-2 run, taking its largest lead of the afternoon, a 12-point advantage with just over 16 minutes to play. The two teams traded runs and Augsburg found itself up just 63-62 with 2:17 left to play. Augsburg's
Myles Shepherd (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) converted on an old-fashioned three-point play to give the Auggies the momentum and a 66-62 lead with 1:12 left in the action. St. Olaf was able to cut the Augsburg lead to 68-66 with 16 seconds remaining, but Augsburg hit 3-of-4 from the free-throw line to seal the 71-66 victory.
St. Olaf (4-3 overall, 1-1 MIAC) was led by Nathan Kuck (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS), who finished with 16 points and four rebounds, on a 7-of-14 shooting afternoon.
For the game, Augsburg shot 49.0 percent (24-of-49) from the field, while holding the Oles to 39.1 percent (25-of-64) shooting. The Auggies claimed a 36-32 advantage on the boards and were able to hit 18-of-24 from the free throw line, while the Oles were only able to connect on 5-of-6.
Augsburg and St. Olaf both return to action on Monday (12/9) with the Auggies traveling down to St. Peter, Minn. to take on Gustavus Adolphus College at 7:30 p.m., while the Oles make the trip to Winona, Minn. to take on St. Mary's University in MIAC action.Â
