BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS --
Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) led the Auggies with 20 points as the Augsburg College men's basketball team posted a 74-67 first-round Minnesota Intercollegaite Athletic Conference playoff victory over rival St. John's University in postseason action on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
With the win, Augsburg advances to the MIAC playoff semifinals for the third time in the past five years. Augsburg will travel to Moorhead, Minn. to take on No. 2 seed Concordia College at 7:30 p.m. on Friday (2/22). The win also marks the first time under coach
Aaron Griess' tenure that the Auggies have reached the 20-win mark and the first time for the Augsburg men's basketball program since 1998-99, when the Auggies finished 24-4 and claimed the MIAC championship.
Augsburg (20-6 overall) was led by Kornbaum's 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor, while he added nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

In a rematch of the 2011-12 first-round playoff game that ended on a buzzer beater, tonight was also a game that proved to be a thriller from start to finish. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the first half, until Augsburg was able to put together a 10-0 run to close the first-half behind five points each from Schmidt and Seidlitz, as the Auggies took a 38-27 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
The Johnnies opened the second-half on an 18-4 run and went up 45-42 with 13:47 to play. Augsburg regained the lead on its next possession and would again stretch the Auggie lead to double digits, going up 63-53 with 6:38 to play. The Johnnies cut the Augsburg lead to 70-67 with 43 seconds remaining but Augsburg's Kornbaum was able to throw down an impressive dunk with 22 seconds left and Schmidt hit 2-of-2 from the free throw line to seal the 74-67 victory for Augsburg.
For the game, Augsburg shot 52.9 percent (27-of-51) from the field, while the Johnnies connected on 43.1 percent (25-of-58) of their shots. The Auggies claimed a 34-25 advantage on the boards and for the third time this season, shot over 50 percent from beyond the arc (52.9 percent -- 9-of-17).
