Auggies clinch MIAC playoff berth with win over St. Olaf

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) scored a career-high 27 points leading the Augsburg College men's basketbal team to a 82-71 victory over St. Olaf College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall. With the win, Augsburg clinches a berth in the MIAC playoffs for the fourth time in the past five years.

Hines led Augsburg (17-6 overall, 12-6 MIAC) while shooting 7-of-11 from the floor and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Also scoring in double-figures for the Auggies was Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) and Noah Veach (JR, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS). Schmidt finished with 13 points and a pair of assists, while Veach recorded 10 points and tied a career-high with five assists.

St. Olaf (9-14 overall, 8-10 MIAC) was led by Mason Braden, who finished with a team-high 14 points, while adding four rebounds.

Despite being a close game, the Auggies led from start to finish. Neither team had led by more than five points until Augsburg put together a 9-2 run to go up 38-29 with 2:12 to play in the first half. St. Olaf was able to get the last two buckets of the half and close the Augsburg led to 38-33 at the intermission.

Augsburg was able to extend its lead to double-digits for the first time of the afternoon on a Hine's layup at the 7:00 mark of the second-half. The Auggies stretched their lead to as many as 15 before a pair of Hine's free throws with 19 seconds to play sealed the 82-71 victory over the Oles.

For the game, Augsburg shot 55.8 percent (24-of-43) from the field, while the Oles hit 46.8 percent (29-of-62) of their shots. The Auggies claimed a 31-29 advantage on the boards and were able to hit on 8-of-14 from beyond the arc, while holding St. Olaf to just 2-of-14 from downtown.

Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (2/13) when it hosts Macalester College in the final home game of the season for the Auggies.
