MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College baseball team split a late-night doubleheader with the University of Wisconsin-Stout late Tuesday night at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
Augsburg (4-2 overall) claimed a 4-1 win in the first game of the doubleheader, and Wisconsin-Stout (3-3 overall) scored a 7-5 win in the second game.
Gary Mariscal (JR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) went 4-for-4 for the Auggies in the doubleheader, while
Ryan Sward (SR, Eagan, Minn.) went 3-for-7 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI.
Gordon Kappers (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS),
Paul Hallgren (SR, Savage, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS),
Brent Kolbow (SR, Forest Lake, Minn.) and
Adam Carl (JR, Eagan, Minn.) had two hits each in the doubleheader.
Augsburg used 12 different pitchers in the doubleheader, with none pitching more than two innings.
In the first game, the Auggies rallied from an early 1-0 deficit, scoring its four runs in the final three innings of play. In the fifth inning, Hallgren singled and scored on a groundout by Kappers. Sward doubled and scored on an RBI single by Carl in the sixth inning, and an RBI single by
Louie LaChapelle (SR, Eagan, Minn.) and a fielder's choice RBI by Sward plated runs for the Auggies in the sixth.
In the second game, Wisconsin-Stout took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but Augsburg tied the game after a pair of walks and a pair of sacrifice flies, by
Andrew Julkowski (FY, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) and LaChapelle.
Each team scored three runs in a wild fifth inning. The Blue Devils claimed three runs off a single and two fielding errors on a single play, while Augsburg scored twice off a single and two errors on a single play, and Sward drove in a run on a single.
But the Blue Devils plated the eventual winning runs in the top of the seventh, as a single by Charlie Meyer plated a run, and another came across on a wild pitch.
Meyer ended up 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game for the Blue Devils, going 4-for-8 in the doubleheader. Mitch LaVelle went 3-for-7 with two RBI in the doubleheader, and Nick Nalbach and Santiago Morales had two hits each.
Augsburg returns to action with five doubleheaders during its spring break week at the Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational.
