MINNEAPOLIS -- Tyler Beck (JR, Fairmont, Minn.) and Tyler Flakne (SO, Fridley, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) scored pitching wins for the Augsburg College baseball team, and the Auggies collected 18 hits in a doubleheader sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Superior in nonconference action on Wednesday at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

Augsburg (3-1 overall) claimed a 7-2 win over Wisconsin-Superior (0-2 overall) in the first game, and a 5-1 triumph in the second game.

Making his first start as an Auggie after transferring from Division II Upper Iowa, Beck struck out three while walking one and allowing just two hits and a run in four innings of work in the first game. Meanwhile, Flakne struck out four while walking two and allowing four hits and a run in four innings of work in the second game. Tanner Oakes (SO, Jordan, Minn.) and Steven Piette (FY, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) pitched in relief for the Auggies in the first game, and Chris Bambenek (SO, St. Charles, Minn.) pitched three scoreless innings of relief, with a strikeout against no walks and only one hit, for the save in the second game.

Augsburg benefitted from big scoring innings in both games. In the first game, a five-run first inning put the Auggies ahead for good, and in the second game, Augsburg used a four-run fourth inning to go ahead for good.

Zach Pavlisick (SR, Phoenix, Ariz./Central HS) and Ryan Sward (JR, Eagan, Minn.) had three hits each for the Auggies in the doubleheader, while Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), Gordon Kappers (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), Billy Brookshaw (FY, Prescott, Wis.), Gary Mariscal (JR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) and Louie LaChapelle (SR, Eagan, Minn.) had two hits each.

The Auggies sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning of the first game, scoring five runs on five hits. Sward drove in two runs on a double, while Kappers hit a two-run single and Pavlisick drove in a run on a single. Two more runs came across in the top of the fifth, as Kappers walked, moved to third on a stolen base and wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single by Pavlisick. Pavlisick later scored on a sacrifice fly by Brent Kolbow (SR, Forest Lake, Minn.).

Wisconsin-Superior scored in the fourth inning, as an RBI single by Tom Fairbanks (JR, Brainerd, Minn.) plated Wyatt Soderquist (JR, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS), and in the fifth inning, as a Soderquist single plated pinch-runner Weston Smith (SO, Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt HS).

LaChapelle, Sward, Kappers and Pavlisick had two hits each for the Auggies in the first game, with Sward, Kappers and Pavlisick claiming two RBI each. Soderquist had two of Wisconsin-Superior's six hits in the first game.

In the second game, the Auggies used a four-run fourth inning to take the lead for good, with a two-run double by Mariscal and a two-run single by Brookshaw accounting for the scoring. Another run came across in the fifth, as Welckle singled to drive home Sward. The Yellowjackets scored in the fourth inning, as Tyler Duex (FY, Chippewa Falls, Wis.) singled to drive in Tony Remund (JR, Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids HS).

Welckle and Mariscal had two hits each for the Auggies in the second game, while Remund had two hits for the Yellowjackets.

Both teams return to action with nonconference doubleheaders at the Metrodome next week. Augsburg faces Wisconsin-Stout next Tuesday (3/12) at 9:15 p.m., while Wisconsin-Superior takes on St. John's next Thursday (3/14) at 4:30 p.m.
