BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College baseball team took a 1-0 lead over the host University of Minnesota after six innings, but the Gophers used a four-run seventh inning to claim a 4-1 victory over the Auggies in a nonconference contest on Tuesday afternoon at Siebert Field.
Division III Augsburg (14-7 overall) took the lead in the sixth inning, when
Gary Mariscal (JR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) reached base on an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Brent Kolbow (SR, Forest Lake, Minn.), then scored after a single by
Gordon Kappers (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) and an infield error.
Division I Minnesota (23-13 overall) gained the lead with a four-run seventh inning, sending eight batters to the plate and collecting five hits. The Gophers put two runners on bases with back-to-back singles, and following a groundout, pinch-hitter Connor Schaefbauer plated a run on a single. After a walk, pinch-hitter Mark Tatera drove in two runners on a single, and a bunt single by Andy Henkemeyer drove in the fourth run of the inning.
In addition to Mariscal's and Kappers' hits, Augsburg leftfielder
Billy Brookshaw (FY, Prescott, Wis.) stroked a double in the fifth inning, and designated hitter
Paul Hallgren (SR, Savage, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) had a single in the seventh inning.
Augsburg used four pitchers in the game, with starter
Ryan Minder (SO, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) throwing three shutout innings, striking out one while allowing one walk and one hit.
Eren Cur (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) had two strikeouts against one hit and no walks in three innings of scoreless relief.
Tanner Oakes (SO, Jordan, Minn.) took the loss for the Auggies, pitching in the seventh inning, and
Tyler Beck (JR, Fairmont, Minn.) retired the side in order in the eighth inning.
Minnesota used six pitchers in the game, with reliever Dalton Sawyer getting credit for the victory. Henkemeyer and Ryan Abrahamson had two hits each for the Gophers, who had seven hits in the contest.
Augsburg has had its next contest, a home doubleheader against Carleton, postponed on Wednesday (4/17). The Auggies' next scheduled action will be on Saturday (4/20) at 1 p.m., as the Auggies travel to face St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn.
