MINNEAPOLIS --
Louie LaChapelle (SR, Eagan, Minn.) went 4-for-6 at the plate with two doubles and three RBI in the doubleheader, leading the Augsburg College baseball team to a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep of Carleton College on Saturday afternoon at Parade Stadium.
Augsburg (16-7 overall, 4-2 MIAC) rallied for a 3-2, walk-off victory in the first game, then rallied from an 8-2 deficit to score a 10-8 win over Carleton (10-12 overall, 0-6 MIAC) in the second game. The Auggies were playing their first home games of the season at Parade Stadium and first games since an April 16 nonconference contest at Minnesota.
Adam Carl (JR, Eagan, Minn.) went 3-for-6 at the plate in the doubleheader, scoring three runs with four RBI, hitting the Auggies' first home run of the season in the second game.
Billy Brookshaw (FY, Prescott, Wis.) went 3-for-7 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Eren Cur (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) pitched a complete-game victory for the Auggies – his second of the season – in the first-game victory, improving to 4-1 on the season. Cur allowed just five hits, striking out four while walking two, throwing 61 strikes among his 97 pitches.
The first game was a pitching duel between Cur and Carleton's Henry Rownd (SR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS), who also pitched a complete-game effort for the Knights, striking out three while walking two. Rownd threw 64 strikes among his 99 pitches.
Carleton struck first in the opener, as Cody Bohlman (FY, Irvine, Calif./University HS) doubled and scored on an RBI single by Nolan Baker (SO, Appleton, Wis./North HS). But Augsburg tied the game in the bottom of the frame, as Brookshaw scored on an RBI single by
Gary Mariscal (JR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) in the fifth inning. Mariscal's hit came an inning after he made a spectacular diving catch in centerfield to end the Carleton fourth inning.
The Auggies went ahead in the sixth, when
Ryan Sward (JR, Eagan, Minn.) walked and came around to score on a LaChapelle RBI double. But Carleton tied the game in the top of the seventh, as Baker singled and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Adam Zweber (SR, Corvallis, Ore.).
Augsburg claimed the win in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Mariscal reached base following a dropped fly ball in the outfield, advancing to second. After a walk and a wild pitch,
Gordon Kappers (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) got the game-winning hit, a single through the left side of the infield.
The second game proved to be a wild affair, with a combined 10 errors – seven against Carleton and three against the Auggies. As a result, just seven of the 18 combined runs were earned – just two earned runs for Augsburg and five for Carleton.
The Knights built an 8-2 lead after two-and-a-half innings, but Augsburg scored the final eight runs of the game to claim the win. The rally started in the third inning, when the Auggies scored three runs, all with two outs. Sward tripled and scored on a Carl single. Carl then scored as a result of a throwing error following a
Paul Hallgren (SR, Savage, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) single, and Hallgren scored on an RBI double by LaChapelle. Carl cut the Knights' lead to 8-6 with a solo home run to left-center in the fifth inning.
Augsburg took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning – all coming after two were out. Mariscal reached base on a fielding error, and after a Kolbow double, Carl stroked a two-run single to drive them home. Hallgren then reached base on catcher's interference, and Carl scored on an RBI single by LaChapelle. Brookshaw capped the Auggie inning with an RBI single to plate pinch-runner
Scott Livermore (FY, Stillwater, Minn.).
John Gallice (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn.) picked up the pitching win for the Auggies, throwing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief of starter
Tyler Beck (JR, Fairmont, Minn.), striking out two while not walking a batter and allowing four hits.
Tanner Oakes (SO, Jordan, Minn.) picked up the save with a scoreless seventh inning.
The Knights claimed the early lead in the second game, as Kevin Johnson (JR, St. Anthony, Minn./DeLaSalle HS) hit a run-scoring double and Bohlman hit a two-run double in the first inning. Augsburg trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the second, as
Zach Pavlisick (SR, Phoenix, Ariz./Central HS) drove in LaChapelle on a sacrifice fly and Brookshaw scored on a wild pitch.
Carleton sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs in the third inning, with the big hit a two-run double by Jeff Dsida (JR, Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS).
Both teams are back in action with road doubleheaders on Sunday (4/28), as Augsburg travels to face Concordia-Moorhead in MIAC action at 1 p.m., and Carleton has a nonconference doubleheader at Luther (Iowa) at 2 p.m.
