Auggies split at Concordia

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Zach Pavlisick (SR, Phoenix, Ariz./Central HS) collected two doubles and a home run, one of four players to drive in three or more runs in the doubleheader, as his Augsburg College baseball team split a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Concordia College-Moorhead on Sunday afternoon at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.

Pavlisick went 3-for-7, scoring two runs and driving in four runs in the doubleheader, collecting a double and an RBI in Augsburg's (17-8 overall, 5-3 MIAC) 7-6 loss to Concordia (12-8 overall, 5-3 MIAC) in the first game, then had a double, home run and three RBI in Augsburg's 13-11 win over the Cobbers in the second game.

Adam Carl (JR, Eagan, Minn.) went 4-for-9 with two runs scored, a home run and three RBI in the doubleheader, while Ryan Sward (JR, Eagan, Minn.) went 5-for-8 at the plate with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.

The Auggies rallied from a 5-1, third-inning deficit and a 7-4, fifth-inning deficit in the second game to tie the contest at 7-7, with the game-tying shot coming from pinch-hitter Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), who hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning. Welckle added a two-run double in the eighth inning, part of a six-run outburst for the Auggies in the extra frame. Augsburg then held off a four-run bottom half of the eighth inning from the Cobbers to preserve the victory and claim the doubleheader split.

Sward went 3-for-5 at the plate in the second game, driving in runs on RBI singles in the third and fifth innings. Pavlisick hit a two-run homer for the Auggies in the fourth inning and an RBI double in the eighth. Brent Kolbow (SR, Forest Lake, Minn.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Billy Brookshaw (FY, Prescott, Wis.) and Louie LaChapelle (SR, Eagan, Minn.) scored two runs each, with LaChapelle and Kolbow each hitting a triple.

Tanner Oakes (SO, Jordan, Minn.) pitched seven-plus innings for the Auggies in the second game, striking out six while walking two. Eren Cur (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS), who had pitched a complete-game victory on Saturday against  Carleton, relieved Oakes in the eighth inning to preserve the win.

Michael Olson led the Cobbers with a 4-for-5 second game, hitting two home runs, driving in four runs and scoring three. Devin Johnson went 3-for-5 with two doubles, driving in two runs while scoring one.

Augsburg took a 6-2 lead into the seventh inning in the first game, but the Cobbers earned the win with a five-run seventh inning, with Jordan Doschadis stroking a two-run single, Ryan Dusek driving in a run on a double, and Kyle Kraemer hitting the game-winning, two-run single. Kraemer went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Olson and Doschadis had two hits each.

Carl went 3-for-4 in the first game, hitting a two-run homer in the first inning. Ryan Sward went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Gary Mariscal (JR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Pavlisick had a run-scoring double for the Auggies.
