Auggies claim sweep at Macalester

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 ST. PAUL, Minn. -- With seven of nine batters claiming two or more hits in the doubleheader, the Augsburg College baseball team scored a sweep of host Macalester College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference twinbill on Sunday afternoon.

Augsburg (14-6 overall, 2-2 MIAC) scored a 12-7 victory over Macalester (7-14 overall, 0-2 MIAC) in the first game, then edged the Scots 2-1 in the second game. Augsburg has now won six of its last games, sweeping three of its last four doubleheaders.

Louie LaChapelle (SR, Eagan, Minn.), Adam Carl (JR, Eagan, Minn.), Paul Hallgren (SR, Savage, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS) and Brent Kolbow (SR, Forest Lake, Minn.) had three hits each in the doubleheader, as the Auggies outhit the Scots by a 20-14 margin. Zach Pavlisick (SR, Phoenix, Ariz./Central HS), Ryan Sward (SR, Eagan, Minn.) and Gordon Kappers (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) had two hits each. All but one of the nine Auggie hitters who saw action on Sunday drove in at least one run in the doubleheader.

Meanwhile, Augsburg received strong pitching efforts in both games. In the first game, Steven Piette (FY, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) struck out five while walking two in four innings of work, with Eren Cur (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) claiming a three-inning save in relief, striking out four while walking two. In the second game, Ryan Mestnik (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) picked up the complete-game victory, striking out two while not walking a batter and allowing just five hits.

Augsburg scored three runs in the second inning, four runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the sixth inning to pull out to the big lead over the Scots in the first game, scoring double-digit runs for the third time this season. The Auggies sent eight batters to the plate in both the second and fourth innings, while sending 10 batters to the plate in the sixth.

Augsburg pounded out 15 hits in the first game -- 14 singles and a double. Sward had the lone double for the Auggies, a two-run hit in the sixth inning. Leadoff hitter Kolbow went 3-for-5 in the first game fo rthe Auggies, while Kappers, Sward, LaChapelle and Pavlisick had two hits each, with Kappers and Sward driving in two runs each.

For Macalester, Sam Berk had three hits and two RBI in the first game, while Ross Bronfenbrenner went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Tom Forster had two doubles for the Scots.

All the scoring in the second game took place in the fourth inning. For Augsburg, Hallgren drove in a run on a single, and LaChapelle drove in a run on a double, while Macalester scored on a Sam Berk single in the bottom of the frame. Carl and Hallgren had two hits each for the Auggies in the second game, with each scoring a run.

The second game was a pitchers' duel between Augsburg's Mestnik and Macalester's Justin Kleschen, who each threw complete games while allowing just five hits each. Kleschen struck out three while walking one.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Tuesday (4/9) at 2:30 p.m., with a doubleheader at St. Olaf.
