Auggie playoff run ended by walk-off homer

BOXSCORE MINNETONKA, Minn. -- There was no dramatic finish for the Augsburg College baseball team on Saturday. Instead, the dramatics went to Concordia College-Moorhead.

Devin Johnson hit a two-run, walk-off home run -- his second homer of the day -- in the bottom of the ninth inning to give his Cobbers a 7-5 win over Augsburg in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Playoff semifinal game at Veterans Field.

Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and Gary Mariscal (JR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) hit home runs for No. 3-seed Augsburg. The Auggies finished their season at 24-15 overall -- Augsburg's fourth 20-plus-win campaign in the last five years.

Trailing 2-0 after one inning following a two-run homer by Concordia's Michael Olson, Augsburg scored five unanswered runs to take a 5-2 lead into the sixth inning. But No. 2-seed Concordia (19-14 overall) answered with five unanswered runs of its own over the final four innings to advance to Sunday's (5/12) playoff championship game against top-seed St. Thomas.

Adam Carl (JR, Eagan, Minn.) led off the top of the second inning with a double, and Welckle followed with his second home run of the season, tying the game at 2-2. Mariscal led off the third inning with a solo homer -- his first collegiate home run -- that glanced off the left-field fair pole, giving the Auggies the lead. Carl drove home two runs in the top of the fifth inning on a single, giving the Auggies a 5-2 advantage.

Johnson hit his first home run of the game for the Cobbers in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Cobbers tied the game in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Braden Rahman.

Both teams had chances to take the lead in the closing innings, as the Cobbers left the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth, and the Auggies stranded a runner at third base in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Olson reached base with a one-out walk, followed by Johnson's second homer of the game, a shot to right field that ended the contest.

Eren Cur (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) struck out two while walking three in 6.2 innings of work for the Auggies, with Ryan Mestnik (SO, Prior Lake, Minn.) pitching 1.2 innings of relief.

Mike Rose struck out two while walking four in 5.1 innings of work for the Cobbers, relieved by Tom Alton, who struck out three while allowing just one hit and no walks in 3.0 innings of relief. Bryce Feia had a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning of relief.

Carl, Welckle and Mariscal had two hits each for Augsburg, while Rahman, Olson, Johnson and Brian Guler had two hits each for Concordia.

The contest was the final game for seven Augsburg seniors -- Cur, Paul Hallgren (SR, Savage, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS), Brent Kolbow (SR, Forest Lake, Minn.), Louie LaChapelle (SR, Eagan, Minn.), Brian Moynihan (SR, Melbourne, Fla./Fordham Prep (N.Y.) HS), Zach Pavlisick (SR, Phoenix, Ariz./Central HS) and Ryan Sward (SR, Eagan, Minn.).
