BOXSCORE 2 COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. -- The Augsburg College baseball team suffered two losses in walk-off fashion on Monday afternoon, falling in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at St. John's University.
Augsburg (19-12 overall, 7-7 MIAC) suffered an 8-7 loss in nine innings -- its third straight extra-inning game -- in Monday's opener, then fell 3-2 to St. John's (17-14 overall, 8-8 MIAC) in the second game.
Since the Auggies' 2013 season resumed after an 11-day layoff due to unseasonal wintry weather in mid-April, Augsburg has had five doubleheaders filled with close finishes. Of the 10 games since April 27, five have been one-run games and five have been two-run games, with four games going to extra innings. Augsburg is 5-5 in those five doubleheaders.
Gordon Kappers (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) had four hits in nine at-bats in the doubleheader for Augsburg, including a home run and double, driving in three runs while scoring two.
Louie LaChapelle (SR, Eagan, Minn.) went 4-for-6 with an RBI in the doubleheader, going 4-for-4 with an RBI in the first game.
Tied at 6-6 entering extra innings in the first game, the Auggies scored a run in the top of the ninth, as
Adam Carl (JR, Eagan, Minn.) led off the frame with a double and scored on an RBI single by
Paul Hallgren (SR, Savage, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson HS). But the Johnnies scored twice in the home half of the ninth, as Max Forster led off the inning with a solo home run to tie the game, and after the bases were loaded with a single, sacrifice bunt and two walks, Dylan Graves hit an RBI single to plate the winning run.
Forster, who also picked up the pitching win in relief in the first game, hit two solo home runs for the Johnnies, with a solo homer in the second inning matching his solo homer in the ninth.
Augsburg scored twice in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2, as Kappers scored on a fielder's choice by Carl, and Carl scored on an RBI single by LaChapelle.
Gary Mariscal (JR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) tripled and scored on a failed pickoff attempt and throwing error in the fourth inning to give the Auggies a 3-2 lead.
The Johnnies scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, keyed by a two-run double by Connor Cline, but Augsburg scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Kappers had an RBI single, while two more runs came across on a double-play grounder and a wild pitch. St. John's tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Brent Kolbow (SR, Forest Lake, Minn.), Hallgren and Mariscal had two hits apiece for the Auggies in the first game, and Carl and Mariscal scored two runs each. Graves went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Johnnies, while Forster went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Tanner Oakes (SO, Jordan, Minn.) pitched a complete-game effort for the Auggies in the second game, striking out five while allowing nine hits. Kappers hit his first collegiate home run in the top of the first inning to account for the Auggies' scoring in the second game.
Augsburg held its 2-0 lead until the fifth inning, when Forster singled and scored on a triple by Aaron Pfaff. Pfaff then scored on an RBI single by Cline. Cline then capped the game for the Johnnies with a one-out, solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Tuesday (5/7) at 2:30 p.m., facing Bethel in a doubleheader at Bethel's Hargis Park in Arden Hills, Minn. The games will be Augsburg's home contests, but have been moved to Bethel's home field.
