Auggies score 2-2 tie at St. Scholastica

BOXSCORE

DULUTH, Minn. -- Olivia Muyres (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) figured in the scoring on both Augsburg College goals on Saturday, with a goal and assist in Augsburg's 2-2, two-overtime tie with the College of St. Scholastica at Saints Field.

Muyres assisted on a goal by Carter Denison (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) in the 36th minute, then scored in the 73rd minute on a header from Molly Allen (JR, Stillwater, Minn.), giving the Auggies (1-0-1 overall) a 2-1 lead at the time.

But St. Scholastica (0-1-1 overall) got the game-tying goal just 2:38 after Muyres' goal, as Kelsey Kehtel notched her second goal of the contest, coming on a penalty kick. She also scored in the 17th minute on a breakaway from Taylor Cunningham.

"Today was tough because the goals we gave up could have easily been prevented, and I thought we played well enough to win," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "Nevertheless, St. Scholastica is a solid team that is consistently in the national tournament, and this is not a bad result."

Following her three-goal effort in Augsburg's 10-1 win at Wisconsin-Superior on Friday, Muyres now has four goals and an assist for nine points on the season. Denison, who had two goals in her collegiate debut on Friday, now has three goals on the season, and Allen now has a goal and four assists for six points on the year.

Augsburg outshot St. Scholastica by an 18-9 margin and had eight corner kicks to the Saints' six. Auggie goalkeeper Katie Gajewski (SR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) had three saves, while St. Scholastica goalkeeper Kelsey Reeves had eight saves.

St. Scholastica has won the last nine Upper Midwest Athletic Conference regular-season titles in a row and has qualified for the NCAA Division III national playoffs five of the last six years.

Augsburg returns to action with its home opener on the newly installed FieldTurf surface at Edor Nelson Field on Tuesday (9/3) at 7 p.m., hosting Wartburg (Iowa).

"We have our hands full on Tuesday with Wartburg, another team that was in the national tournament last year, who also just beat a strong team in St. Olaf," Navarre said. "We have a young team and played a lot of players this weekend. Overall, I am excited about our team. We had a good preseason and have a lot of room to improve."
