MINNEAPOLIS -- Phil Putratz (SR, Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) scored on a 46-yard screen pass from Ayrton Scott (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) with 2:37 left to play, lifting Augsburg College to a 19-16, come-from-behind victory over Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football contest on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg (2-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC) drove 78 yards on four plays in 51 seconds for the eventual game-winning drive, including a 21-yard pass from Scott to Joey Sonnenfeld (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) and a 12-yard run by Scott.
Gustavus (1-1 overall, 0-1 MIAC) took the ball at its own 41-yard line following a 35-yard kickoff return by Matt Boyce (SO, Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS), but on the first play from scrimmage, Augsburg's Felix Coleman (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) forced a fumble by Gustavus running back Jeffrey Dubose (SR, St. Paul, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS), which Marques Townsend (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) recovered with 2:24 left. Augsburg then converted a first down on a fourth-and-one, two-yard rush by Scott, and was able to run out the clock.
Gustavus held the lead most of the game, primarily behind the rushing of Dubose, who gained 227 yards on 37 carries, scoring two touchdowns -- a two-yard run in the first quarter that capped a nine-play, 91-yard drive, and a 12-yard run in the third quarter that capped a nine-play, 68-yard drive to give the Gusties a 16-6 advantage. The 37 carries tied a Gustavus single-game school record for rushes.Â
But Augsburg scored the last 13 points of the contest to capture the MIAC win. WIth 5:52 left in the third quarter, Sonnenfeld caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Scott, capping a nine-play, 75-yard drive. The drive included a 45-yard screen pass from Scott to Putratz.
Augsburg's defense forced the Gusties to punt on its next three possessions, the last giving the Auggies the ball on their own 22-yard line with 3:28 left for the eventual game-winning drive.
Scott completed 18-of-30 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing 21 times for 56 yards. Putratz caught five passes for 104 yards, while rushing 12 times for 44 yards. Sonnenfeld caught four passes for 66 yards, and Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) caught five passes for 38 yards, and Jerise Washington (JR, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) caught three passes for 38 yards.
Following Dubose's game-opening touchdown, the Auggies drove 12 plays and 49 yards, with the drive capped by an 11-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Sonnenfeld. But on the extra-point attempt, the Auggies' kick was blocked by the Gusties' Torey Asao (SR, Chaska, Minn.), and teammate Beau Bachman (SR, St. Peter, Minn.) returned the ball back for a defensive two-point conversion, giving the Gusties a 9-6 lead.
Gustavus' Dubose handled the ball on 38 of his team's 71 offensive plays, with 37 rushes and one catch for eight yards. He compiled 235 of the Gusties' 352 yards of total offense, with his 227 rushing yards and eight receiving yards.
Augsburg outgained Gustavus by a 353-352 margin, but the Gusties held the ball for 33:25 compared to Augsburg's 26:35. Gustie quarterback Mitch Hendricks (SO, Laporte, Minn./Bemidji HS) completed 12-of-23 passing for 100 yards, with Phillip Butler (SR, St. Paul, Minn./St. Agnes HS) catching four passes for 34 yards.
Defensively, Augsburg linebacker Michael Juberian (JR, Richfield, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) recorded 18 tackles (five solo), while Coleman had 10 tackles (six solo), 1.5 tackles-for-loss and an interception. Enrico Barrozo (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) had nine tackles (two solo), and Chris DeVet (JR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) recoreded eight tackles (three solo).Â
For Gustavus, Cameron Cropsey (JR, Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS) recorded eight tackles (four solo), including three tackles-for-loss, and had an interception. Travis Pepper (JR, Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West HS) had seven tackles (two solo), and Zack Martinez (SO, Lenexa, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) and Matt Keller (JR, Eagan, Minn.) had six tackles each.
Both teams have their Homecoming games next Saturday (9/28), with Augsburg hosting Hamline at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field, and Gustavus hosting St. Olaf at 1:30 p.m.
