Auggies hang onto Hammer with 55-20 victory

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Quarterback Ayrton Scott (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest HS) rushed for 161 yards and threw for 214 yards and four touchdowns, as his Augsburg College football team scored a 55-20 win over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Edor Nelson Field.

Scott rushed 26 times for 161 yards and completed 17-of-28 passes for 214 yards and the four scores, accounting for 375 of Augsburg's 522 yards of total offense in the victory.

Augsburg is now 3-0 overall, 2-0 in MIAC play, while the Pipers drop to 1-2 overall, 0-2 in MIAC play. It's Augsburg's fifth straight victory dating to last season, its longest winning streak since a five-game span from the last game of the 2007 season to the first four games of the 2008 campaign.

Phil Putratz (SR, Mazeppa, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) rushed for 64 yards and scored two touchdowns, while Tyrell Martin (JR, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) rushed for two scores. Joey Sonnenfeld (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) caught four passes for 67 yards and two touchdowns, and Jerise Washington (JR, Roseville, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Hakeem Bourne-McFarlane (SR, Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) also caught touchdown passes.

The win enabled Augsburg to keep "The Hammer," the traveling trophy in the series between Augsburg and Hamline, for the eighth time in the nine meetings for the trophy since 2005. Augsburg has won the last four games in the series and is now 16-2 in its meetings with the Pipers since 1996.

Augsburg's defense held Hamline running back Austin Duncan (SO, New Orleans, La./Jesuit HS), who had rushed 298 yards in an overtime loss to Carleton last Saturday, to just 58 rushing yards on 21 carries. Duncan scored on a three-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Augsburg outgained Hamline by a 522-348 margin in the contest, rushing for 269 yards and passing for 253 yards. Hamline rushed for 100 yards and passed for 248 yards.

The Auggies scored on their first five drives of the game, scoring touchdowns on the first four drives and building a 30-14 lead at halftime. Augsburg scored on nine of its 15 drives in the game.

Putratz rushed for a 30-yard touchdown to open the scoring and added a two-yard rushing score in the fourth quarter. Sonnenfeld caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Scott in the second quarter and a 30-yard touchdown pass from Scott early in the third quarter.

Martin scored two second-half touchdowns, a two-yard run in the third quarter and a six-yard run in the fourth quarter. Bourne-McFarlane, a two-way player as a defensive back and wide receiver, caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Scott in the first quarter. Washington scored on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Scott late in the first quarter. Brandon Searle (FY, Dresser, Wis./St. Croix Falls HS) connected on a 35-yard field goal for the Auggies in the second quarter.

Hamline's Duncan scored the Pipers' first touchdown on a three-yard run in the first quarter. Deon Bishop (SO, Los Angeles, Calif./Santa Monica HS) caught a 26-yard pass from Tim Bona (SO, Columbia Heights, Minn.) on a tipped ball with one second left in the first half. Naji El-Araby (FY, Blaine, Minn.) scored on a nine-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Bona completed 21-of-35 passes for 216 yards for the Pipers, while rushing 10 times for 20 yards. El-Araby caught 10 passes for 94 yards.

Defensively, Avery Dorsett (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had 11 tackles (six solo) for Augsburg, while Chris DeVet (JR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Michael Juberian (JR, Richfield, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's HS) had 10 tackles each. Denzel Anderson (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Tanner Wiseman (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) had quarterback sacks for the Auggies.

For Hamline, Anthony Hill (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park HS) led all players with 17 tackles (eight solo), while Julian Stubbs (SO, Rossville, Ga./Ridgeland HS) had 10 tackles (four solo).

Both teams return to action next Saturday (10/5) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Bethel and Gustavus playing at Hamline.
