BOXSCORE
MINNEAPOLIS -- Katie Gajewski (SR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) claimed her 16th career shutout in goal with a six-save effort, as her Augsburg College women's soccer team played a scoreless, two-overtime tie with Wartburg College in a nonconference contest on Tuesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg (1-0-2 overall) claimed a 23-15 shots advantage over Wartburg (1-0-1 overall), an NCAA Division III national tournament participant each of the last two seasons. The Auggies outshot the Knights by a 7-1 margin in the 20 minutes of overtime, including three close shots in succession in the final two-plus minutes of play.Â
Both teams had several opportunities to score throughout the game. Wartburg had two shots hit goalposts in the first half, while Augsburg's Marie Fitzgerald (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wis.) had a shot hit the post in the first minute of the second half.
"Tonight was a great early season test for us against a solid opponent in Wartburg. Overall, I was pleased with the effort," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "However, if we are going to ascend, we have to finish our chances against the top teams. We were able to create some great opportunities to win, and unfortunately were not able to capitalize."
Gajewski is in fourth place in Augsburg program history with her 16 career shutouts; Maggie DeGroot (2005-08) holds the school's shutout record with 36.
Wartburg goalkeeper Katie Reinhardt (JR, Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock HS) had 10 saves in goal to share the shutout with Gajewski.
Abi Rodstein (JR, Eagan, Minn.) had six shots in the game for the Auggies, while Fitzgerald and Carter Denison (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had four shots each.
For Wartburg, Lauren Bauer (SR, LaPorte City, Iowa/Union HS) had four shots, while Olivia Jansen (FY, Johnsburg, Ill.) had three shots.
Augsburg returns to nonconference play on Thursday (9/5) at 7:30 p.m., hosting Bethany Lutheran at Edor Nelson Field.
"I'm excited about the energy level and depth we have right now," Navarre said. "This week presents a difficult challenge in that we have two games against top teams in the region, along with another game versus an improving Bethany Lutheran program on Thursday. Therefore, our depth will surely be tested. Fortunately, we have a lot of hungry players who want to showcase their abilities, so it should be a good week for our program."
