MINNEAPOLIS -- Claiming a 52-2 advantage in shots and dominating possession throughout the game, the Augsburg College women's soccer team scored a 5-0 win over Bethany Lutheran College in a nonconference contest on Thursday night at Edor Nelson Field.
Marie Fitzgerald (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wis.), Olivia Muyres (JR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) and Marta Anderson (FY, Mankato, Minn./Mankato East HS) had a goal and assist each for the Auggies in the first half, and Carter Denison (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) scored two second half goals.
Augsburg (2-0-2 overall) has now outscored its opponents by a 17-3 margin in its first four games, and three Auggies are currently leading the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in overall statistics in both goals and points -- Muyres has five goals and 12 points, Denison has five goals and 11 points, and Fitzgerald has three goals and seven points.
Bethany Lutheran (1-1-0 overall) goalkeeper Alex Mowery (SR, Fairmont, Minn.) collected 19 saves in goal, as the Auggies had 24 shots-on-goal to BLC's one.
All 24 players on the Augsburg roster saw action in the game, with the reserves getting the bulk of the playing time. Sixteen Auggies recorded shots in the contest.
"Ultimately we needed this game to help us improve and we accomplished that," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "We were able to play the full team, which is always exciting."
Katie Gajewski (SR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) started in goal for the Auggies and played the first 19 minutes before being relieved by Lucy Bukowski (SO, Two Harbors, Minn.), who had the lone save for the Auggies in relief.
Fitzgerald opened the scoring for Augsburg with a goal from Muyres in the 10th minute, and Muyres scored fron Fitzgerald and Anderson in the 15th minute. Anderson scored an unassisted goal for Augsburg in the 30th minute.
Denison notched her goals in the 70th and 89th minutes, assisted by Nicole Szczebak (FY, Goodyear, Ariz./Desert Edge HS) on the first tally and Morgan Kenny (FY, Wauwatosa, Wis./Brookfield Central HS) on the second.
Augsburg returns to action on Saturday (9/7), hosting Wisconsin-Eau Claire at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field. The Blugolds are ranked No. 5 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III North Region rankings, while the Auggies are ranked No. 8.
"Saturday's game will be a great test for us and we look forward to another game versus a ranked opponent," Navarre said. "UW-Eau Claire is off to a good start with two wins versus MIAC teams already -- should be an excellent game!"
