BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS --
Maris Bolender (FY, Sioux Falls, S.D./O'Gorman HS) scored her first collegiate goal in the 68th minute for Augsburg College, but an "own goal" with two seconds remaining in regulation time resulted in a 1-1 tie in two overtimes with the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a nonconference women's soccer game on Saturday at Edor Nelson Field.
Bolender scored on a shot from the top of the box on a scramble following a corner kick in the 68th minute for Augsburg (2-0-3 overall).
The Auggies controlled possession for most of the second half, but Wisconsin-Eau Claire (2-0-1 overall) gained the game-tying goal in bizarre fashion. In the closing seconds, a shot from distance was redirected by an Augsburg defender into the Auggies' net, crossing the line with two seconds left in regulation.
"Obviously, it's tough to give up a bizarre own goal with two seconds left in big game versus a ranked opponent, but we can't feel sorry for ourselves. We have to keep working to improve," said Augsburg head coach
Mike Navarre. "We have solid players who respond well to challenges and are determined to improve so that will be our immediate focus -- just keep getting better."
Saturday's game matched two teams who were ranked in the latest Division III North Region rankings by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America -- Wisconsin-Eau Claire was ranked No. 5, while Augsburg was ranked No. 8.
Augsburg controlled possession for much of the overtime, outshooting the Blugolds by a 10-2 margin in the 20 extra minutes, en route to a 27-15 advantage in shots in the game. Augsburg also had 11 corner kicks to the Blugolds' four.
Katie Gajewski (SR, Wausau, Wis./Wausau East HS) had five saves in goal for Augsburg, while Nina Behrenbrinker (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) had 10 saves for Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Marta Anderson (FY, Mankato, Minn./Mankato East HS) and
Carter Denison (FY, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had five shots each for Augsburg, while
Taylor Kuramoto (JR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) had four shots.
Augsburg returns to action on Tuesday (9/10) at 4 p.m., with a game at Northwestern-St. Paul.
