Augsburg shoots season-best 66.7% but falls to Tommies

BOXSCORE ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team shot an incredible 66.7 percent from the floor but it wasn't enough as the Auggies fell 82-70 to the No. 10 ranked University of St. Thomas in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Schoenecker Arena.

Augsburg (11-5 overall, 7-4 MIAC) was led offensively by Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn.) and Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), who finished with 16 points apiece. Augsburg also continued to enjoy the return to the line-up of Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS), who posted a season-high 14 points, while adding six assists and four rebounds.

St. Thomas (13-3 overall, 10-1 MIAC) was led by the duo of Conner Nord and Erik Tengwall. Nord posted a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Tengwall led the Tommie offense with 25 points.

Augsburg shot the lights out in the first half, posting an incredible 75.0 percent (18-of-24) field goal percentage and led by as many as 14 points in the frame. The Auggies led for the entire first half and despite giving up an 8-0 run to end the frame, Augsburg took a 42-37 lead into the locker room at the intermission. 

The Tommies grabbed their first lead of the game at the 16:17 mark and slowly pulled away. Augsburg continued to shoot well from the floor but the Tommie defense held the Auggies scoreless from 3-point range and the Auggies struggled at the free throw line, only connecting on 4-of-13 in the frame as the Tommies claimed the 82-70 victory.

For the game, Augsburg shot 66.7 percent (30-of-45) from the field, while St. Thomas connected on 45.5 percent (12-of-25) of its shots. The Tommies claimed a 33-25 advantage on the boards but Augsburg was able to outscore St. Thomas 44-32 in points in the paint.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (1/25) at 3 p.m., when it travels to Northfield, Minn. to take on St. Olaf College.
