Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn.) led the Augsburg College men's basketball team with 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field, as the Auggies posted an 86-71 victory over rival Hamline University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Hutton Arena.
Kornbaum, currently top-ranked among Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players in overall scoring with an 18.9 points per-game average, scored 20-plus points for the third straight game and fifth time this season. He also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, while adding an assist, a blocked shot and a steal.
Noah Veach (SR, Grand Haven, Mich.), currently ranked second in the MIAC in overall scoring with an 18.7 points per-game average, scored 21 points for Augsburg (6-4 overall, 2-4 MIAC), including a 9-for-13 effort from the field. He also added five rebounds an assist and a steal.Â
Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored 17 points with three steals for the Auggies, and
Joey Sonnenfeld (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) came off the bench to score a season-high 13 points, shooting 6-of-7 from the field.
Hamline (6-6 overall, 3-4 MIAC), finished with two players in double figures, led by Dior Ford's 25-point effort on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor.
Both teams had strong shooting efforts in the contest, as Augsburg hit 57.4 percent (35-of-61) from the field, while Hamline connected on 59.2 percent (29-of-49) of its shots. Both teams finished with an identitical 26 rebounds but Augsburg was able to force 14 Hamline turnovers, while committing a season-low five. The Auggies dominated the paint, outscoring the Pipers 48-34 and claimed a 17-6 advantage in points off turnovers.
Augsburg used an 8-0 run midway through the first half to turn a 29-27 lead to a double-digit advantage. The Auggies led by as many as 12 in the first half and went into the locker room at the intermission with a 44-33 lead. Â Augsburg was able to stretch its lead to as many as 18 in the second half before cruising on to the 86-71 victory.
Augsburg will return to action on Saturday (1/11), when the Auggies host Macalester College in a men's and women's double header. Women's action begins at 1 p.m. while the men tip off at 3 p.m.
