Auggies open baseball season with split

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 CLARKSVILLE, Ark. -- Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) went 5-for-11 at the plate with three runs scored and five runs driven in, leading the Augsburg College baseball team in its season-opening doubleheader, a split with the University of the Ozarks on Friday afternoon at Lonnie Qualls Field.

Carl went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI in Augsburg's 10-9 loss to Ozarks in the first game (seven innings), then went 3-for-6 with a run scored and three RBI in Augsburg's 15-2 win in the second game (nine innings). Carl was one of eight Auggies to have multiple hits in the doubleheader, as Augsburg collected 28 hits and 24 runs in the two games.

The second game also featured two strong pitching performances. Starter Tanner Oakes (JR, Jordan, Minn.) struck out three while walking one and allowing six hits in seven innings of work to claim the victory, with Jordan Petschke (JR, Fairmont, Minn.) throwing two innings and allowing one hit while striking out two.

Augsburg pounded out 18 hits in the second game, including six hits in a six-run fourth inning, as 11 batters came to the plate. The Auggies added seven runs in the final four innings of the contest to blow the game open.

Bryce Pruszinske (SO, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the second game, while Rhett Hebig (FY, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Andrew Douglas (FY, Eastvale, Calif./Roosevelt HS) went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and four RBI in the second game, en route to a 3-for-6, five-RBI effort in the doubleheader.

Billy Brookshaw (SO, Prescott, Wis.) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI in the second game, en route to a three-hit, three-RBI effort in the doubleheader. Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) also had two hits in the second game, part of a 3-for-7, two-run doubleheader.

The first game was a back-and-forth battle. Augsburg scored three runs in the third inning, a run in the fourth and five runs in the sixth inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. Leading 9-5, the Auggies surrendered four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ozarks loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, and scored the winning run on an RBI single by Peyton Johnigan.

Gordon Kappers (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), Gary Mariscal (SR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) and Carl all had two hits and two runs each in the first game, with Carl and Welckle each driving in two runs.

For Ozarks, Tony Morales hit a home run and went 4-for-4 with five RBI in the first game, en route to a 5-for-8, six-RBI performance in the doubleheader. Sam Shook and Quinten Parker had two hits each in the first game.

The teams complete the season-opening series with a single game on Saturday (2/15) at 12 p.m.
