Gordon Kappers (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, leading the Augsburg College baseball team in its series finale at the University of the Ozarks, a 7-5 loss on Saturday afternoon at Lonnie Qualls Field.
Steven Piette (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) went 2-for-5 with a run scored for Augsburg (1-2 overall), which outhit Ozarks (2-1 overall) by a 9-8 margin. Kappers reached base in four of his five plate appearances on Saturday, with three hits and a walk. He scored on a balk in the ninth inning.
The host Eagles built a 3-0 lead against Auggie starter
Tyler Flakne (JR, Fridley, Minn./Totino-Grace HS), but none of the three runs against him were earned, as the Eagles took advantage of errors in the second and fourth innings to score their runs. Peyton Johni drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Dean Igert singled in a run in the second inning, and Andrew Beck scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
Augsburg cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning, as
Bryce Pruszinske (SO, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) walked and Piette reached on a bunt single, with both scoring following an infield error. But the Eagles scored twice in the sixth inning, with an RBI double by Alex Smith and an RBI single by Igert.
Billy Brookshaw (SO, Prescott, Wis.) led off the seventh inning with a walk and scored on an RBI single by
Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) for the Auggies, but the Eagles added two runs in the bottom of the eighth, as an RBI double by Andrew Beck and a sacrifice fly by Alex Smith plated runs.
Augsburg scored two runs in the top of the ninth, with Kappers scoring on a balk and
Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) scoring following an error.Â
Flakne struck out two while walking two and allowing three hits in four innings of work for the Auggies.
Jordan Brandt (FY, Eagan, Minn.) and
Hayden Rothenberg (FY, Myrtle Beach, S.C./Carolina Forest HS) pitched in relief.
Igert, Freddy Prince and Taylor Parker had two hits each for the Eagles, with Igert and Smith driving in two runs each. Grady Finley struck out two while walking two in six innings of pitching, with John Singler and Beck pitching in relief.
Augsburg is now idle until Spring Break week, when it travels to Tucson, Ariz., for the Tucson Invitational Games. Augsburg's first action in Arizona will be on March 15, when it faces Wisconsin-La Crosse in a doubleheader.
