Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored his 1,000th career point as the Augsburg College men's basketball team posted an 80-71 victory over Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall. Seidlitz becomes the 19th player in Augsburg men's basketball history to join the 1000-point club.
Seidlitz finished the game with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists -- playing over 39 minutes in the contest. Seidlitz now has 1,001 career points in 101 career games.
Noah Veach (SR, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) had a spectacular afternoon for Augsburg (15-7 overall, 11-6 MIAC), scoring a career-high 29 points on a perfect 8-of-8 shooting performance from the floor and a 13-of-15 afternoon at the free throw line. Veach added five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals to his stat line.
Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) added a season-best 21 points and five assists and
Ryan Gilmer (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) led all players on the boards, pulling down 10 rebounds and adding four assists and three points.
With the win, Augsburg has now won eight in a row at home and is 11-1 this season at Si Melby Hall. The Auggies will play their final regular season home game next Wednesday (2/19) when they host Carleton College.
Bethel finished with three players in double figures led by Brycen Wojta, who finished with 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the floor.
In a game that featured six tied scores and five lead changes, fans enjoyed an exciting afternoon of basketball. Augsburg was able to build a 20-13 lead with just over 9 minutes to play in the first half but the Royals battled back and grabbed a 27-26 advantage with 4:05 remaining in the frame. Augsburg's
Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) converted on a layup with 40 seconds to play to bring the score to 34-31 in favor of the Royals but Bethel was able to get a layup of its own with 14 seconds left to take a 36-31 lead into the locker room at the break.
The two teams went basket for basket for the first 15 minutes of the second half with Augsburg grabbing its first lead of the frame at the 5:48 mark off a Seidlitz 3-pointer. It turned out to be a lead the Auggies would not relinquish as Augsburg was able to convert on 12-of-14 from the free throw line in the final five minutes to seal the victory.
For the game, the Auggies finished 50.0 percent (25-of-50) from the field, while the Royals connected on 51.9 percent (28-of-54) of their shots. Augsburg posted a dominant 34-22 advantage on the boards and was able to convert on 22-of-29 from the free throw line, while Bethel was only able to hit 8-of-12. The teams finished with an identitical 34 points in the paint but the Royals outscored the Auggies 18-0 in bench points.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (2/19) when the Auggies host Carleton College at 7:30 p.m.
