BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 70-67 loss to Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference quarterfinal action on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
Andy Seidlitz (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) led Augsburg (18-8 overall) with his first career double-double, posting 18-points and 10-assists in 40 minutes of action. The 10 assists were a career-high for Seidlitz.
Dan Kornbaum (SR, Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) led all players with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor. Kornbaum reached another milestone in his decorated career, eclipsing 1,000 points in an Auggie uniform, when he scored a layup at the 12:36 mark of the first half. Kornbaum has scored 1,015 points as an Auggie, and 1,296 in his career (including two seasons at the University of Minnesota-Duluth).
Also having a strong performance for Augsburg was
Noah Veach (SR, Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS). Veach finished with 18 points, on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor, and added five rebounds and three assists.
Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) added seven points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Auggies.
Bethel (14-12 overall) finished with three players in double figures led by Brycen Wojta, who finished with 15 points, six rebounds and six assists.
In a game that featured nine tied scores and three lead changes, fans certainly found themselves at one of the most exciting games of the season. The entire first half was a back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to extend its lead to more than five points. Augsburg led 27-22 with 5:21 to play in the frame, but Bethel was able to outscore the Auggies 10-1 to close the half and take a 32-28 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Augsburg was able to tie things up a 42-42 off a jumper by Hines at the 15:01 mark but Bethel countered with a 12-2 run to go up 54-44 with 11:24 to play. Augsburg was able to cut the lead to 61-59 off a Kornbaum layup with just over five minutes to play. A Seidlitz 3-pointer with 2:20 left in the action cut the Royal lead to 68-67 but a pair of Bethel free throws extended the Royal lead to 70-67. Augsburg had a good look at a 3-pointer with five seconds left and a chance at a put-back off the miss, but was not able to convert as the Royals hung on for the win.
For the game, Augsburg shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the field, while Bethel converted on 50.0 percent (27-of-54) of its shots. The Auggies posted a 37-25 advantage on the boards and were able to outscore the Royals 38-28 in points in the paint and 10-2 in second chance points. The difference in the game came down to 3-pointers and free throws. Bethel was a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe, while Augsburg was only able to hit 10-of-20. The Royals also were able to hit 9-of-21 from three point range, while Augsburg could only hit on 5-of-21.
