California Lutheran, the No. 13-ranked team in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 national poll and No. 7-ranked team in the American Baseball Coaches Association Division III national poll, scored the first five runs of the game and held off Augsburg for a 5-2 win.
Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.), Gordon Kappers (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), Steven Piette (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Rhett Hebig (FY, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) had two hits each for the Auggies in their 12-hit attack, with Buescher and Kappers each recording doubles.
Augsburg scored a run in the eighth inning, when Kappers hit a double and came around to score on a single by Piette. In the ninth inning, Bryce Pruszinske (SO, Savage, Minn./Burnsville, Minn.) rached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on a double by Buescher, and scored on a fielder's choice by Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.).
Jordan Petschke (JR, Fairmont, Minn.) struck out five while walking one in 4.1 innings of work, with just one earned run among the three charged to him. Jordan Brandt (FY, Eagan, Minn.) pitched three innings of relief, with Matt Fontneau (FY, Centennial, Colo./Valor Christian HS) pitching the final 1.2 innings.
Carroll (Wis.) 7, Augsburg 4 (12 inn.) --Â GAME BOX
Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) went 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored, and Steven Piette (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) went 2-for-4 for Augsburg in its final game of the Spring Break trip, a 7-4 loss to Carroll (Wis.) in 12 innings, its second extra-inning game against Carroll during the week.
Augsburg rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, but a two-out, pinch-hit home run by Alex Nockerts tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the ninth inning. Carroll scored three unearned runs in the 12th inning, taking advantage of two errors by the Auggies.
Augsburg scored two runs in the seventh, as Rhett Hebig (FY, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) drove home Piette on a single, then came home on a double by Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.). Carl scored an unearned run following an error in the eighth inning, and a sacrifice fly by Piette plated R.J. Cervenka (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS).
Augsburg pitchers tallied 14 strikeouts in the game, with starter Tyler Flakne (JR, Fridley, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) and reliever Piette each notching five strikeouts and reliever Ryan Minder (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) recording four.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19
Augsburg 9-12, Illinois Tech 1-1 --Â GAME 1 BOXÂ |Â GAME 2 BOX
Augsburg received two complete-game pitching gems from Tyler Beck (SR, Fairmont, Minn.) and Tanner Oakes (JR, Jordan, Minn.) in a sweep of the Illinois Institute of Technology, winning 9-1 and 12-1. Beck struck out 12 while not walking a batter and allowing just six hits in the first-game victory, while Oakes recorded two strikeouts against a walk and seven hits in the second-game win.Â
Andrew Julkowski (SO, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) went 5-for-7 at the plate with a triple, five RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader, while Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) went 4-for-8 with a double and two runs scored. Steven Piette (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) went 3-for-7 with two doubles, four RBI and a run scored, and Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) went 3-for-7 with two doubles, five runs scored and two RBI. Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) went 3-for-5 with five runs scored and an RBI, and Gordon Kappers (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) went 3-for-8 with three runs scored and an RBI.Â
Augsburg built a 7-0 lead after two innings, pounding out 11 hits in the first game, including a triple by Julkowski and a double by Piette. In the second game, Augsburg opened the scoring with a three-run first inning, then claimed a two-run fifth frame and seven-run sixth inning en route to the win.Â
The Auggies had 16 hits in the second game, keyed by three-hit efforts by Julkowski and Buescher. Welckle had two doubles and two RBU, while Buescher and Piette added doubles for the Auggies.
MONDAY, MARCH 17
Augsburg 7-9, Marian (Wis.) 5-19 -- GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX
Andrew Julkowski (SO, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) each went 5-for-8 at the plate, wtih Julkowski scoring two runs and driving in four, and Buescher scoring three runs and driving in one, in Augsburg's split with Marian.
Julkowski went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in the first-game victory for the Auggies, while Buescher went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI in the second game, an Auggie loss.
Trailing 5-1 after four innings in the first game, the Auggies scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, sending 12 batters to the plate. A two-run triple by Steven Piette (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and an RBI double by Rhett Hebig (FY, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) proved to be the big hits of the inning.
Jordan Brandt (FY, Eagan, Minn.) struck out two in 4.0 innings of pitching for the Auggies, with John Gallice (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn.), Chris Bambenek (JR, St. Charles, Minn.) and Piette pitching in relief. Piette struck out the side in the seventh inning to score the save.
Marian scored seven runs in both the second and fourth innings, overcoming a six-run third inning for the Auggies in the second game. Julkowski went 2-for-4 for the Auggies with a three-run triple in the game, part of the six-run third inning. Buescher had a double for the Auggies in his 4-for-5 effort. Andrew Douglas (FY, Eastvale, Calif./Roosevelt HS) went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Hebig, Billy Brookshaw (SO, Prescott, Wis.) and Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had two hits each in the game.
SUNDAY, MARCH 16
Central (Iowa) 10, Augsburg 2 -- GAME BOX
A seven-run fourth inning, in which Central sent 13 batters to the plate, proved to be the difference in the game. Central also scored three runs in the eighth inning.
Augsburg's two runs came across in the fifth inning. Andrew Julkowski (SO, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) doubled and scored on an RBI single by Steven Piette (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS), and Piette later scored on a single by Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.).
Tyler Flakne (JR, Fridley, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) struck out three in 3.2 innings of pitching for the Auggies. Ryan Minder (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) and Matt Fontneau (FY, Centennial, Colo./Valor Christian HS) pitched in relief.
Augsburg 2, Carroll (Wis.) 1 (13 inn.) --Â GAME BOX
Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) singled home Buescher with the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the 13th inning, giving Augsburg the win in the marathon game wtih Carroll University. Buescher singled, moved to second on an error and to third on a wild pitch, then scored on Carl's single.
The Auggies took a 1-0 lead in the fith inning, as Piette singled to dvive home Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS), but Carroll tied the game with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Carl and Buescher had two hits each for the Auggies. Jordan Petschke (JR, Fairmont, Minn.) struck out five while not allowing a walk in six innings of work for the Auggies. Fontneau had two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief, and Piette struck out five without a walk in the final 4.2 innings of relief to score the win.

Augsburg 8-11, UW-La Crosse 15-8 -- GAME 1 BOX | GAME 2 BOX
Rhett Hebig (FY, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) went 5-for-7 at the plate with three RBI to lead Augsburg in the doubleheader, going 3-for-4 in the first game and 2-for-3 with three RBI in the second game.
The Eagles scored in every inning in the seven-inning first game, including a six-run fourth inning and four-run seventh inning. Tyler Beck (SR, Fairmont, Minn.) took the pitching loss for the Auggies, with Ryan Mestnik (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.) and Matt Fontneau (FY, Centennial, Colo./Valor Christian HS) pitching in relief.
The Auggies scored twice in the third inning, with Gordon Kappers (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) singling and scoring on an error, and Bryce Pruszinske (SO, Savage, Minn./Burnsville HS) driving home a run on a single. Augsburg scored two runs in the fifth inning on a two-run double by Andrew Douglas (FY, Eastvale, Calif./Roosevelt HS). The Auggies scored four runs in the sixth inning, with a two-run single by Steven Piette (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Cetnennial HS), an RBI single by Billy Brookshaw (SO, Prescott, Wis.) and a bases-loaded walk.
The Auggies jumped on the board in the second game, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew Julkowski (SO, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Hebig each had two-run singles, and a bases-loaded walk, groundout and an RBI single by Brookshaw drove in the other runs.
Three more runs came across in the second inning, as Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) hit an RBI triple and later scored on an error, and Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) drove in a run on a single.
Tanner Oakes (JR, Jordan, Minn.) scored the pitching win, striking out two while walking two in 5.1 innings of work. Fontneau and John Gallice (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn.) pitched in relief.
