BOXSCORE 2 NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- A pair of walk-off decisions spoiled Augsburg College pitching performances in a doubleheader loss to Carleton College in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Mel Taube Field. Augsburg (8-14 overall, 2-6 MIAC) fell 2-1 to Carleton (11-7 overall, 5-3 MIAC) in the first game, then lost 4-3 in 12 innings in the second game.
In the first game, Augsburg's
Tyler Beck (SR, Fairmont, Minn.) struck out 13 Carleton hitters, while walking just one and allowing seven hits. In the second game, starter
Tanner Oakes (JR, Jordan, Minn.) recorded five striekouts against no walks and eight hits in eight innings of work, while reliever
Steven Piette (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) struck out four while walking one and allowing two hits in three-plus innings of relief.
Both runs charged to Beck in the first game were unearned, as the Knights scored both runs off of three Augsburg errors. In the first inning, the Knights scored following a two-out fielding error. Augsburg tied the game in the top of the seventh inning, when pinch runner
Scott Livermore (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) stole third base and scored on a throwing error. In the bottom of the seventh, Carleton's David Stillerman reached base on a fielding error, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored following a fielding error.
Carleton pitcher Jack Violetta struck out six Auggies while walking two and allowing just two hits -- a single by
Rhett Hebig (FY, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) in the fifth inning and a single by
Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) in the seventh.
Augsburg opened the scoring in the second game in the second inning, when
Luke Chinn (SO, Burnsville, Minn.) singled and came around to score on a single by Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.). Carleton took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, as Stillerman hit a run-scoring double and Willie Freimuth followed with an RBI single.
Augsburg took the lead back with runs in the fourth and fifth innings, as
Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) scored on a wild pitch and
Andrew Julkowski (SO, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) hit an RBI double. But the Knights tied the game in the sixth, with back-to-back triples by Stillerman and Freimuth.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 12th inning. Kevin Johnson led off the inning reaching second base on a fielding error and a throwing error. After an intentional walk, a single by Nolan Baker loaded the bases, and a Jack Atterberry single drove in the game-winning run.
Welckle, Julkowski and
Billy Brookshaw (SO, Prescott, Wis.) had two hits each for the Auggies in the second game.
Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (4/15) at 2:30 p.m., with a doubleheader at Concordia-Moorhead.
