Gordon Kappers (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) went 4-for-7 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI, leading the Augsburg College baseball team in a doubleheader sweep of St. Olaf College on Saturday afternoon at Parade Stadium. Augsburg (10-16 overall, 4-8 MIAC) claimed wins over St. Olaf (17-13 overall, 8-6 MIAC) by 5-1 scores in both games.
Augsburg outhit St. Olaf by a 22-10 margin in the sweep -- a 10-4 advantage in the first game and a 12-6 advantage in the second game.
Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) had two doubles among his three hits in the doubleheader, while
Rhett Hebig (FY, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) had a three-run double among his four RBI and three hits.
Andrew Douglas (FY, Eastvale, Calif./Roosevelt HS) and
Billy Brookshaw (SO, Prescott, Wis.) also had three hits apiece in the doubleheader.
Meanwhile, four Augsburg pitchers combined to strike out 16 Oles in the doubleheader, while allowing just one walk in 16 innings of work. First-game starter
Tyler Flakne (JR, Fridley, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) struck out four while walking one and allowing just three hits and an unearned run over six innings to score the win, with
Steven Piette (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) striking out two of the four batters he faced in a scoreless seventh inning. In the second game,
Jordan Petschke (JR, Fairmont, Minn.) collected six strikeouts while allowing no walks and five hits over seven innings in a winning effort, with
John Gallice (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn.) and Piette striking out two batters each in relief.
In the first game, St. Olaf took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, as Erik Curry scored on a passed ball. But the Auggies took the lead in the fifth inning, with Brookshaw driving home Douglas on an RBI single, and Kappers plating Brookshaw and Hebig on a two-run single. RBI singles by Douglas and Hebig gave the Auggies a 5-1 lead in the sixth inning. Kappers,
Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.), Douglas and Hebig had two hits each for the Auggies in the first game.
In the second game, back-to-back doubles by Kappers and Welckle gave the Auggies a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. St. Olaf tied the game in the fourth inning, when Sam Maus singled and came around to score on a double by Jack Schechinger. Augsburg took the lead back in the fifth, with back-to-back doubles by Welckle and
Andrew Julkowski (SO, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS). Hebig's three-run double in the eighth inning capped the scoring for the Auggies.
Welckle went 3-for-4 for the Auggies in the second game, while Kappers, Julkowski and Brookshaw had two hits each. Maus had three of St. Olaf's six hits in the second game.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Tuesday (4/22) at 2:30 p.m., hosting Saint Mary's in a doubleheader at Parade Stadium.
