Auggies edged 1-0 by Division I Gophers

BOXSCORE MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College pitchers allowed just three University of Minnesota hits in the ballgame -- none over the final four innings of play -- in the Division III Auggies' 1-0 loss to the Division I Golden Gophers in a nonconference baseball contest on Wednesday afternoon at Siebert Field.

A leadoff triple by Connor Schaefbauer and a sacrifice fly by Tony Skjefte in the bottom of the fourth inning led to the lone run of the game for Minnesota (15-9 overall). Two of the three Gopher hits in the game came in the fourth inning.

Starter Ryan Minder (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) threw four strong innings for the Auggies (6-8 overall), striking out one while allowing three hits and no walks in his effort. He threw just 28 pitches, with 19 strikes, in his four innings of work, retiring the first six batters he faced and keeping the Gophers off the scoreboard through the first three innings.

The three Auggie relievers allowed just five Minnesota baserunners -- four coming on walks and another following a fielding error -- over the remaining four innings, with all five runners stranded on base. Lincoln Hochmuth (FY, Cannon Falls, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran HS) pitched two innings of scoreless relief with a strikeout, and Jordan Brandt (FY, Eagan, Minn.) and John Gallice (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn.) each pitched scoreless innings.

Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.), Andrew Julkowski (SO, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS), Billy Brookshaw (SO, Prescott, Wis.) and Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) each had hits for the Auggies in the game.

Augsburg's best chance to score came in the top of the seventh inning, when Brookshaw singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on an infield groundout. Gary Mariscal (SR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) hit a line drive to the left side that was snared by a diving Skjefte at third base to end the Auggie threat.

Toby Anderson picked up the win for the Gophers, pitching 3.2 innings of relief of starter Cody Campbell, who threw the first three innings. Brian Glowicki threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief for the save.

Augsburg is scheduled to return to action on Saturday (4/5) at 1 p.m. with a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Gustavus.
