Auggies fall in doubleheader to Bethel

BOXSCORE 1 | BOXSCORE 2 MINNEAPOLIS -- Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) went 3-for-6 at the plate with a double, RBI and a run scored in the doubleheader, but his Augsburg College baseball team dropped both games of the twinbill to Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Friday at Parade Stadium. Bethel (19-6 overall, 12-2 MIAC) claimed 3-1 and 6-4 victories over Augsburg (11-18 overall, 5-11 MIAC).

Carl went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in the first game, and had a hit and scored a run in the second game. Andrew Julkowski (SO, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) had a hit in each game for the Auggies, who were limited to eight total hits in the doubleheader -- three in the first game and five in the second.

Bryce Marquardt went 4-for-9 in the doubleheader with two doubles and an RBI to lead Bethel, while Grant Anderson went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Luke Schultz had two doubles and drove in a run.

In the first game, the Royals scored three runs in the fourth inning, sending seven batters to the plate. Schultz hit an RBI double and Jarad Watts hit a two-run triple to cap the Bethel scoring. Augsburg scored its lone run in the bottom of the frame, as Carl hit a double to left-center to drive home Julkowski.

Augsburg pitcher Tyler Flakne (JR, Fridley, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) struck out seven while walking one in five innings of work, with Ryan Minder (JR, Maplewood, Minn./Roseville HS) finishing the game in relief. Matt Herringshaw pitched a complete-game win for the Royals, striking out four while walking two.

In the second game, Bethel rallied from a 4-2, seventh-inning deficit, collecting five straight hits -- all with two out -- in the top of the eighth inning and scoring four runs. Matt Conrad, Nik Anderson, Lisle and Marquardt all had RBI singles in the eighth inning, as the Royals sent nine batters to the plate. Augsburg had runners at the corners in the bottom of the ninth inning, but were unable to score.

The Auggies struck first in the second game, as Julkowski opened the frame with a single and eventually came around to score on a groundout by Gary Mariscal (SR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS). Brett Neuville tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly for the Royals to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, but the Auggies took the lead back in the bottom of the inning, as Carl scored on a fielder's choice by Mariscal.

Bethel tied the game again with a run in the fifth, but the Auggies scored twice in the seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead. Rhett Hebig (FY, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) hit an infield single and came around to score on a fielder's choice by Andrew Douglas (FY, Eastvale, Calif./Roosevelt HS), and Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher (FY, Prior Lake, Minn.) came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS).

Jordan Petschke (JR, Fairmont, Minn.) struck out six while walking two in 7.0 innings of work for Augsburg, with John Gallice (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn.) and Steven Piette (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) pitching in relief. Jake Hanzalik had five strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work for Bethel, with Chris Hall picking up the win with 2.2 innings of relief.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (4/26) at 1 p.m., with a doubleheader at Macalester.
