Auggies rally for split of doubleheader with Scots

PAUL, Minn. -- Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) went 4-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader, scoring the go-ahead goal in the eighth inning of the second game, as his Augsburg College baseball team scored a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference twinbill at Macalester College on Saturday afternoon. Augsburg (12-20 overall, 6-12 MIAC) scored a 3-1 win in the second game, while Macalester (12-22 overall, 4-14 MIAC) won the first game 8-3.

The Auggies trailed 1-0 after three innings in the second game, but rallied with single runs in the final three innings to score the win. In the seventh inning, Tyler "Jonesy" Buescher reached base after being hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a groundout and stole third base, then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

In the eighth inning, Welckle reached base on a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, then scored on an RBI single by Gary Mariscal (SR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS). Steven Piette (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) capped the scoring for the Auggies with a solo home run in the ninth. Mariscal went 3-for-4 for the Auggies in the second game, while Welckle went 2-for-4. 

Tanner Oakes (JR, Jordan, Minn.) struck out eight while not walking a batter in six innings of work, with Tyler Beck (SR, Fairmont, Minn.) picking up the win with four strikeouts in three innings of scoreless relief.

Aidan Hennen went 3-for-4 for the Scots with a double, while Ross Bronfenbrenner went 2-for-4, hitting a solo home run in the third inning.

In the first game, the Scots used a five-run sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie, en route to the 8-3 win. Colin Carpenter hit a two-run homer, Tom Forster hit a run-scoring double and Quentin Stuart hit a two-run double to account for the host's scoring in the sixth inning. 

The Scots scored the first three runs of the game, as Phillip Stuhr hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Carpenter doubled and scored on a single by Bronfenbrenner in the second. Augsburg tied the game with a three-run fourth inning. Welckle hit an RBI single to drive in Andrew Julkowski (SO, Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS), with Adam Carl (SR, Eagan, Minn.) coming home following an error. Billy Brookshaw (SO, Prescott, Wis.) later hit a run-scoring single to plate Welckle.

Joseph Aulisi struck out six while walking four in a complete-game pitching effort for Macalester. Bronfenbrenner went 3-for-3 for the Scots, while Stuhr and Carpenter had two hits each. Welckle and Julkowski had two hits each for the Auggies.

Augsburg will be idle for Finals Week this upcoming week, and will return to action on Sunday, May 4 at 1 p.m., hosting St. Thomas in a doubleheader at Parade Stadium.
