Auggies score split at Gustavus

PETER, Minn. -- Rhett Hebig (FY, Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview HS) went 4-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader with two doubles, a home run and four RBI, and pitcher Tanner Oakes (JR, Jordan, Minn.) threw a nine-inning, complete-game victory in the second game, as the Augsburg College baseball team scored a split of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference twinbill at Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday afternoon.

Gary Mariscal (SR, Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) also went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader with two doubles, incluidng a 2-for-3, two-RBI effort with a double in Augsburg's (7-9 overall, 1-1 MIAC) 5-3 loss to Gustavus (4-8 overall, 1-3 MIAC) in the first game. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double in Augsburg's 10-2, second-game victory.

Oakes struck out four while walking one and allowing just five hits in the second game for the Auggies, improving to 4-0 on the season with his second complete-game win of the year. He has struck out 11 while walking five in a team-best 28.1 innings of work this season, claiming a 3.18 earned-run average.

Augsburg's catcher, Hebig went 3-for-4 at the plate in the second game, driving in three runs while scoring twice. He connected on a RBI double in the second inning, then hit Augsburg's first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the seventh inning. Hebig is leading the Auggies in all three offensive percentages -- a .423 batting average, a .538 slugging percentage and a .508 batting average, while standing second on the team with 11 RBI.

Another first-year contributor, designated hitter Andrew Douglas (FY, Eastvale, Calif./Roosevelt HS), went 2-for-5 in the second game with two runs scored, hitting a three-run double in the seventh inning. Douglas leads the team with 12 RBI, while hitting .370 in his 10 games played.

Augsburg pounded out 16 hits in the second game -- its 10th game with double-digit hits this season -- with eight of the nine hitters in the order recording at least one hit. Abe Welckle (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) went 3-for-5 with a run scored, Billy Brookshaw (SO, Prescott, Wis.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Gordon Kappers (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS) went 2-for-5.

The Auggies fell behind 5-0 after three innings in the first game, with Gustavus claiming 10 hits off of Auggie starter Tyler Beck (SR, Fairmont, Minn.) and a hit off reliever Ryan Mestnik (JR, Prior Lake, Minn.). Beck recorded seven strikeouts against one walk in his five innings of work, with Mestnik throwing a scoreless sixth inning.

Back-to-back doubles by Hebig, driving in a run, and Mariscal, driving in two runs, accounted for Augsburg's scoring in the seventh inning. The Gusties scored a run in the second inning and four runs in the third inning, sending nine batters to the plate and claiming five hits.

Josh Chatfield went 4-for-7 at the plate with three RBI for the Gusties in the doubleheader, including a 3-for-3 effort in the first game with two RBI. David Tranvik went 2-for-2 in the second game, driving in two runs and scoring one. Christopher Kelly threw a complete-game victory for the Gusties in the first game, striking out four while walking two and allowing five hits.

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Thursday (4/10) at 2:30 p.m., facing Hamline University in a rescheduled doubleheader at Midway Stadium in St. Paul, Minn.
